I am in need of assistance to load some 30/30 Winchester using IMR Powder IMR 4831 with 160gr. Hornaday FTX Leverevolution Projectiles. I have an 11th Edition Speer Reloading Manual. The manual gives load data for 150gr projectiles and 170gr. projectiles but no listing for 160gr projectiles. Powder and other components are difficult to come by where I live and the IMR 4831 was all I could get at the time assuming (We all know what we do when we assume) the data would be available. Components are not exchangeable and I don't want to be stuck with powder I can't use. Can anyone help? Your assistance would be appreciated.:)
Thanks,
Charlie:banghead:

IMR4831 is too slow of a powder for 30-30. It is designed for large magnum type rounds. Place an ad and see if someone would be willimg to trade you something more suitable for 30-30. As far as the bullet weight is concerned, Hornady should have data available for that bullet/cartridge combo.

You need to use a propellent that is listed in a reloading manual or on line from the propellant or bullet manufacturer for the round you are loading for. At least until you gain some experience and THINK you are able to go outside published data and stay safe. I use 3031 for my 30-30 reloading. The LeveRevolution propellant was what Hornaday used to best effect with that bullet but good luck finding any these days.YMMV

Now you can use the next heavier bullet's data and work up a safe load with it as a rule when reloading. It will not be quite as fast as the heavier bullet but should work well anyway. Be aware that the FTX bullets require the cases to be cut shorter to fit the crimp groove and you DO need to roll crimp the bullet unless you single feed the rounds. Not sure the amount but the brass does need to be shorter to fit in the action.

If you didn't already buy that powder I recommend you don't. There are plenty of powders you can use for loading the 30-30 but 4831 is really not one of them.

The classic powder for the 30-30 is IMR3031. IMR4895 or H4895 will do a good job. The newer Leverevolution powder is a great choice especially with the FTX bullets. I have seen LVR on the shelves when hardly no other powders were available.

CFE-223, Varget, H335 and W748 can also be used, and a few others.

If you have load data for your powder in your cartridge but not for your specific bullet weight, you either use data for the next heavier bullet or call the powder company and ask them. All the powder companies I've contacted over the years have been more than glad to help.

I load 28.5 grains IMR 3031 using the 160 gr. Hornady FTX bullet one hole group out to 75 yards

You need to get a LYMAN reloading book or a LEE or Sierra or you can look it up on the NET here. There is a lot to learn about reloading!! GOOD LUCK

R15 also works great for this bullet but it can be difficult to find.

Hornady specifies a trim length of 2.029" and a max case length of 2.039".
