Hey guys, I am meeting up with someone tomorrow to possibly purchase a Ruger Security Six, 357 mag, 4" barrel in stainless. He is asking $400 which I believe to be fair as long as this is in good condition. This would be my first revolver, what should I be looking for when checking a used revolver in general, and is there anything in specific I need to watch for with this particular model. Thanks!

I've got a 6" blued one and 4" stainless, love em they're great revolvers. Best of luck, BTW we do need photos:).

Beautiful, judging from the lack of turn line on the cylinder and minimal staining of the front of the cylinder I'd say it's hardly been shot.

Look for the factory "Big Grips," like this-

They really transform the ergos of the gun. The "Service" style Ruger grips are VERY slender and simply don't give you much control of the weapon, especially with hot loads.

I actually sold a beautiful 6" because I hated the Service grips- didn't know at the time that the Big Grips existed. Then I bought the above gun in a heartbeat when I discovered it.

The Six-series Rugers are fantastic, durable revolvers. Great choice, don't let it go!

Those are the grips I'm eyeing now!

I still have the OEM grips off of the 151- model 2¾ s/s Security Six that I bought new in '75. I replaced them with a set of Pachmayrs because I could not guarantee that I would be wearing patrol skins when/if I suddenly had to use pistol.

With the gloves I had no issue with control but with bare skin, not so much ... or enough ...

I second the target grips, picked mine up for $25 on gunbroker, eBay is good source too. Good price, I paid $450 for mine

Just ordered a set of used factory target grips from ebay, cant wait for them to get here...though I really do need to get to the range and try her out I suppose first....
That's a nice looking rig...what holster is that?

Thanks! It’s a Lobo gunleather model 1 S-L, I really like it. You can get it with the snap loops like I have so you don’t have to take your belt off to remove, or the regular style with belt slots. The belt is from them as well.

Congratulations. My first firearm was a 6" Security Six just like my Dad's. I was 20 years old and had just moved out to the country. Still have it -- it's a great gun. I would probably choose a 4" if I could do it over again. The GP100 was just coming out when I bought it and I wondered if I was cheaping out by not getting the newer model line but didn't have the funds to justify it. Since then a lot of folks have come to prefer the -Six series from Ruger for lighter weight and trimmer lines.
Mine still wears those Pachmayr grips that yours has and I think they are the worst feature of the gun, but I'm leaning toward the smaller factory wooden grips as I think they would fit my hand better than large grips. Just haven't found them yet.

CDNN did have some cheap a few years ago depending on which grip type you have. Amazon carries some and Numrich as well.

I haven't been this excited to get a new gun to the range...ever. I've wanted one of these for the last 6 or 7 years, but either they've been way too expensive or someone else snaps them up before me. Saw one at a gun show about 3 years ago for $400 and thought about it too long, and it was gone. I thought maybe this would be the last piece to round out the collection...but I also thought my 1st 1911 was that gun too, then a Remington Rand came into my life. I'll have a full range report by Monday:thumbup:

Looks like you got a good deal!
Have one just like it and I’m sorry I didn’t buy one way back when they came out!
Great handgun and you didn’t go wrong!

She runs beautifully. I've only shot one other 357, and that was a little LCR, with full house magnum rounds, that was not fun

This Ruger on the other hand, was fantastic! Shot 158 grain JSP in 357 and 130 grain FMJ in 38spl. The pic of the target below was not the best, that was before I realized how high the 38's hit vs the 357, but not bad for 1st time out at 25yds

Well worth it, that is a fun gun to shoot! 20180914_134419.jpg 20180914_134646.jpg
