RE: Sending firearms out of state for safe keeping:

If they are relatives that are keeping the firearms, could you just not "give" them to them as a "gift". My FIL presented me with two handguns at Thanksgiving.....according to MSP, they are subject to voluntary registration (yeah right!) so I would presume that giving a firearm to a relative in VA would be subject to the same level (or less) of scrutiny.

Any thoughts?

Norton:
When a firearm changes ownership between two persons who reside in different states, an FFL must be involved.

Kharn

I guess it wouldn't be worth the hassle because they would just be itching to shoot them and I don't want someone to get in trouble on my behalf. What a free country we live in. My apologies for the thread drift, Mr. Tuttle.

Kharn,

I don't think that's so for relatives.....but otherwise you are right.

Cheers...

BTT....too much good information here to let it get buried.

Has everyone made their phone calls and sent their emails?

just called everyone

I went throught the whole JP Cmte roster, and even my own senator Rona Kramer (who is co-sponsoring the POS, even though I sent her a letter at the beginning of the session explaining WHY the ban was dumb:rolleyes: )

Sen. Garagiola's staff was hands down the rudest - didn't even take my info down, like all the others did: "Thanks - we're keeping a tally - BYE (slam phone)".

I would like to go to Annapolis next Tuesday, but I don't know if I can get away from work. . .

time to buy up property in Baltimore! this bill will virtually eliminate crime! ;)

I know it is tough to get away from work, school and families, but something like this WILL BE IRREVERSIBLE if it passes, and we'll have nobody to blame but oursleves. I took a vacation day so I can attend, but we certainly will need a bigger voice than mine.

/guilt trip off

Anyone going from the Silver Spring/Burtonsville/Olney/Laurel area?

Another sample letter:

Dear Senator Whoever:

As a lifelong tax-paying resident of Maryland I am strongly opposed to SB 288 and any other gun control legislation. When a similar bill was introduced last year the position of the Maryland State Police was that it would have no impact on homicides in the state, since this type of firearm is not used by criminals. The tragic ‘sniper’ shootings would not have been prevented since the gun was acquired out of state. However these types of firearms are used in shooting sports, hunting and for self-defense. Since Maryland has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country it seems ludicrous to deprive law abiding citizens of tools to defend themselves

A case in point is the ballistics fingerprinting law. At last count the cost has exceeded five million dollars and has resulted in no convictions. At a time when the state has financial problems do you think it’s wise to add another costly bureaucratic law that will do nothing to stop crime or deter violence?

I strongly urge you to oppose SB 288.

Sincerely,

If this S--- passes my family and I are so out of here. I told my wife if Kennedy won the election we were moving. Now if this is how it is going to be in MD. I DON'T NEED TO LIVE HERE

Hello Penn St.

Hi all,

Day off from school today (ice....what ice? ) so I spent a little time working the phones this morning.

Here are the folks that I called and what I got out of them:

Senator John Gianetti – 410-841- 3141 Does not favor anything stronger than federal ban

Senator Leo Green -410-841-3631 No position at this time

Senator James Brochin - 410-841-3648 No position at this time

Judicial Proceedings Committee

Senator Jennie Forehand - 410-841-3134 co-sponsored the bill, so obviously in favor of it

Senator Robert Garagiola - 410-841-3169 primary sponsor of the bill

Senator Larry Haines - 410-841-3683 no position at this time

Senator Ralph Hughes 410-841-3656 co-sponsor of the bill

Senator Nancy Jacobs 410-841-3158 “the Senator is strongly pro-2nd amendmentâ€

Senator Phil Jimeno 410-841-3658 “the Senator is pro-2nd amendment and gun rightsâ€

Senator Alex Mooney 410-841-3575 against the ban

If you look at the Judicial Proceedings committee, we've got a chance of putting together a majority if we can pull Senator Haines over to our side. Be sure that you call each and every one of these folks, but especially Haines.

Garigiola's office was not rude to me....even asked what my reasoning was behind my opposition. Foresk$% I mean Forehand's office was a bit flippant as the receptionist said "You do realize she's a co-sponsor of the bill, right?" I responded that I knew that and that was why I was calling......

"Senator Phil Jimeno 410-841-3658 “the Senator is pro-2nd amendment and gun rights"

Wow...and he's a Democrat.

I emailed him several days ago, and even played the "neighbor" card (He lives in my neighborhood).

I'm still awaiting some sort of reply:(

I was over at ar15.com and there was a little discussion on this, but not much! I would think AR owners would be way "up in arms" about this.

Anyway, I posted some more info and will be meeting a few guys from that forum Friday night.

From the NRA-ILA site:

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

Next Tuesday, February 10th, the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will hold a public hearing on Senate Bill 288, which proposes to BAN the possession of so-called "assault weapons" in Maryland.

This onerous bill defines an "assault weapon" as any semi-automatic firearm which possesses even ONE cosmetic feature that is deemed unacceptable by the bill’s sponsors. The bill also bans "copycat guns"- anything the state thinks resembles an "assault weapon". In addition, the bill mandates registration of any such firearms that are already in private hands by a certain date.

Several members of the Judicial Proceedings Committee who support the proposed ban need to hear from you. Please be sure to contact the Senators listed below and voice your strong opposition to Senate Bill 288, the Maryland Assault Weapons Ban. Please make the call today--- the future of gun ownership in Maryland depends on it!

Chairman Brian Frosh (D-Montgomery): (410) 841-3124

Vice Chairman Leo Green (D-Prince George’s): (410) 841-3631

Senator John Giannetti (D-Prince George’s): (410) 841-3141

Senator Jim Brochin (D-Baltimore): (410) 841-3648

Senator Jennie Forehand (D-Montgomery): (410) 841-3134

Senator Rob Garagiola (D-Montgomery): (410) 841-3169

Senator Ralph Hughes (D-Baltimore City): (410) 841-3656

Jim Brochin, my State Senator, replied to my email today. He wrote that he supports citizens' rights to defend themselves. He also stated that he "will vote against SB-288."

All,

I have generated a MS word document using Norton's note to his Senator as the basis to all of the senators on the Judical Proceedings Committee voicing my opposition to SB 288. Included in there is another note to the Governor. I would be happy to send a copy to fellow Marylanders. Just drop me a note at [email protected] remove the x's and z's to get me.

00-Guy

one rapidly realizes that there are 20 guys in the State that show up

Well this one is so important hat I'll bet we have 21 (since you're out of town) and if me and spot77 show up, if my math is correct that would make 21 right?

I have never done as much for gun rights in MD as you Harry, but by my analysis there are ate least 25 Marylanders on this board. There are at least 400 members of my gun club and at least thousands more members of the Associated Gun Club and at a minimum 50,000 NRA members in MD.

It would seem that sacrificing whatever to get there early and taking up spaces could be achieved if a small percentage of the gun owners gave a damn.

Guess not. Kiss 'em good-bye. Registration leads to confiscation.

At least we can say we tried - sort of.

See you in VA, TX, TN, NC, SC or wherever.

Rm....THAT is great news!

OO-Guy, thanks for doing that. I emailed you for a copy.

MikeK, I'll be wearing a dark gray/almost black lightly pinstriped suit; I'm kinda' tall (about 6'2) with a buzzed head. (hahaha....I'll look like 98% of the people there!)

I should be there around 10:00. If you want to get in touch with me, pm me for my cell phone number.

It's always been a pleasure meeting other THR members.

sorry, if i'm a kill joy

i would love it if 100 guys & gals show up on Tuesday

I was talking to a friend this weekend and he asked
Why do you care? Don't you already own everything you need?

For me its a Liberty Thing.

I'd love to make it for this but I just don't have the leave available at work. I'll try and get the wife and I working with letters though.

I will try to be there also.......I may have to work (Property appraiser) but will try to schedule any work for Monday or Wednesday so as to be free Tuesday.........also it's not that far of a drive for me as I live in AA county.
