Herters is now the house brand for Cabelas
and their .22 lr is dirt cheap. Is it any good?
I usually use CCI Mini Mags but I see bulk deals on the Herters that are tempting

From what I could find, it is made by Winchester and only a step above Winchester Super X in quality and accuracy. It probably won't shoot as good as CCI Mini Mags. But every rifle is different on what ammo it prefers.

Here is an older thread about Herter's 22LR and it is your typical cheap bulk ammo.

I should have pointed out I'm using it in pistols also on that link guy said he gets his ammo from Walmart good luck with that now

I know that was an older thread. I did find a few photos online showing how the bullets were deformed in the box, which is typical of any bulk packaged 22lr ammo. The Herter's will probably be fine for general plinking use but I would not expect it to be very accurate. Most bulk ammo is not not know for accuracy.

I bought some a while ago to try out, but I just haven’t gotten to that particular box of ammo yet. If it’s back on the shelves at BPS/Cabelas I will bring it next time I go out to the range and see how it shoots in a couple of guns.

Stay safe.

I think I'll pick up a small box of 100 tomorrow and try it out with my Walther P22 and my Ruger Wrangler before I commit to a bulk purchase

I got a box of 100 back in the dark days of shortages. I’ve shot about half of it and it’s nothing remarkable. My buckmark liked it and functioned well with ok accuracy. It wasn’t memorable in a a rifle. It’s supersonic, so it has that trans-sonic buffet thing at 50 yards. In a pistol, it seems to matter less. It’s better than Win or REM bulk boxes, but not really a hidden gem.

Overall, I’d buy it again if it was cheaper than CCI Standard or Aguila Super Extra. I just keep finding cheaper Aguila.

There is a green-boxed Herters that sucks.
This brown-boxed Herters works very well in my Buckmark pistol, Savage 64 and Winchester 62A rifles.

The dud rate is typical but accuracy is rather good in these guns. I buy them every time they're put on the shelf.

I recently bought a 500 round box at Bass Pro. Garbage ammo. Lots of duds, feeding issues with multiple guns. Ended up trashing the last hundred or so rounds as they weren't worth the trouble.

I can remember back in the day when Winchester was a respected name what happened too many ownership changes?
Like most American businesses, shareholder’s come first, so dumb everything down to the least they can get away with to maximize profits.

There was a time when businesses cared about having a good name and took care of their employees, that seems to not be important anymore.

The current production Winchester 22lr leaves a lot to be desired, which is disappointing since it used to be my favorite ammo. Not too expensive and cycled everything. Now though, it seems the QC is non-existent.

I'm like a cheap you know what. I'll take anything that comes along, shoot it with a smile and I don't care how many duds I get. My shooting is 100% plinking so I don't care about accuracy and reliable functioning. I'm just and old geezer who sticks his head out the back door and pops off a few rounds now and then.

To answer the OPs question, I bought a brick of the stuff and I am currently shooting it up. I rate the stuff about average. Certainly better that Thunderduds. ( Well, that isn't saying much o_O )

If you don't mind the duds and are not after the most accuracy then cheap bulk ammo will work as long as it cycles in your gun.

I like making small groups at longer distances so I use higher quality ammo.

i tried herters 22lr ammo a few months ago, it is junk, out of my ruger sr22 anyway. 25% ftf, fte, both solid and hollow point varieties. maybe it’s ok in a single action revolver, but i’m not bothering to try it anymore. herters was $10/100, cci (and aguila) was $11-12/100. i wouldn’t buy herters for half that and it’s not worth saving a buck over way better ammo, especially if one relies on a 22lr firearm. my sr22 is a travel companion, so cci is its go-to ammo, maybe aguila for the shooting range.

herters 9mm and 38sp ball ammo work fine.

I use it to plink with a semiauto rifle and pistol, and, so far, not a bad experience. Of course, I am not using it to drill flies a mile away, so it is good for my purpose. Steel targets from 7 to 50 yards are in trouble!
What I have found is that failures with pistols (and not only with 22LR) comes from limp-wristing the pistol, but some people blames the blipping ammo. You know what I am talking about.

Yes I do know what you're talking about plus it's hard to believe that a big national chain like Cabela's would sell ammo that's as bad as some people are saying at the very least they would have liability issues

They also sell Remington Thunder Duds and Golden Turds along with craptastic Winchester ammo too. Both are known junk ammo as is a lot of Winchester ammo in the last 2-3 years. Bass Pro really doesn't care as long as they are making a profit.

Again if you are okay with duds and the cheap bulk ammo functions in your guns, then by all means use it. But there are definitely better choices available for not much more money.

I understand your point. CCI Mini Mags are my first choice anyway. And as you said they are not that much more.

Limp wrist a .22?
I suppose that could be a causal factor with a small polymer handgun, but with most .22 repeaters, such as a Ruger mkI or a Woodsman?

Generally speaking, I run into issues when I feed cheap bulk .22 ammo to semi autos , and have excellent results with Mini Mags. (I am sure that there are other good quality selections as well.) I don’t experiment with the cheap stuff anymore because I am too damned impatient. What I have left in cheap .22 gets fed to my S&W m.17.
