Hi-point' s are a no frills gun and are heavy but they do work. I have yet to see one come back broken where I work. I do prefer the Kel-Tec though since you can use double stack mags from glock or S&W.
Don't know the price ranges on either anymore, haven't paid attention to the Hi-Point and we haven't had any Kel-Tec's in a while.
When I bought my KT it was only $300 I'm sure they have gone up though. Just buy what you like, if you can shoot both first I'd try that. I like the KT folds up but some people hate the sight lay out.
To each his own, that's why there are so many different ones out there. You have to shell out the money and live with the gun so your opinion matters the most.
I shot an older one in 2007. For the brief number of rounds I put through it, it fed, fired and shucked every one and put the bullets where I wanted them to go. That one was uglier than a mud fence, but newer ones, with their more "tactical" styling, are actually not bad looking. For ~$250 I might take a chance. I've been burned by enough handguns selling for twice to nearly four times as much that I have much less regard for price as an indicator of quality than I used to.
Without a doubt the most fun gun I have. I have loaded over 3000 rounds of 9mm with cast lead and cleaned it once. It is very accurate (I can group 4 inches or so at 75 yards....) not bad for a 9mm
I like mine (995TS), pretty much. The odd shape of the stock slaps my cheek a little, and sometimes my beard hair gets caught between the stock parts. Functions flawlessly; great sights, easy to shoot, and I like the fat grip. Go get one, they're great for the price -- local shop had a special a while back at $200, I paid $250 for mine.
