Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a good carbine for self defense/varmints (coyotes). I've looked at the Hi Point 995TS and the Kel-Tec Sub2000 (I'm obviously not spending alot of money here lol)

So, which of the two, or what other lower priced carbines ($500 or under) are reliable and worth the money?

I've not heard any horror stories about the Hi Point or their customer service, although I've heard a few about the Kel Tec.

Comments appreciated, thanks!

Surplus Ammo has a complet M4 Rifle AR-15 kit minus your stripped lower for 459.00, and they have there brand stripped lower for 59.00. I don't have a problem with HiPoint but a AR-15 is alot nicer and much more powerful than that little carbine.

I would strongly recommend looking into a 16" Rossi model 92 in .357 or .44 magnum. Can be found new in the price range you are talking about. I've owned several, and have been very pleased with them.

If you really want to shoot varmints, a pistol caliber carbine is probably not your best choice...

If the criteria is home defense as well as varmint, I'd still stand by .44 magnum.

It's more for home defense, and just keeping the coyotes away from the animals on the farm. And alot of plinking haha

I have shot both the kel tec sub2000 and the hi point carbine in 9mm. Bot hsot well although I would suggest the kel tec because it can take Glock magazines. WHat about an m44 mosin Nagant carbine, only five shots but it has a 16 inch barrel and is in 7.62 by 54R. Just a thought.

7.62x54 Russian seems a bit overkill for home defense. I'd be a bit concerned about over-penetration in commercial (or Soviet block surplus) ammunition.

Can you swing $600 (a little less if you find it on sale)? The S&W M&P-15 Sport is $600 at the big box places. I've owned a Kel-Tec Sub-2000, and it was a great little pistol caliber carbine. That said, the M&P Sport is a whole 'nother league nicer rifle than the Sub-2k. The M&P Sport is incredibly high quality for the price. It's not a $1200 AR-15, but it's amazing how nice it is for half that. Search Sport and my user name for more details.

True in most settings 54R would have way too much overkill, but than again I live way out in the boonies:). But yes if there are other houses near by 54R would have too much over penetration. But it would work great for varmints:D.

hipoint all the way. best support and stand behind their product. they will fix it if theirs something wrong and for free to and you'll get a free mag. lifetime warranty that's transferable. alot of accessories. and cool looking. I have one in 45 and its dead acurate, my wife loves it.

The Saiga idea is something I might look into for my next rifle purchase.

I have a Hi Point 995TS, and I love it. No issues so far. It's drawback is the 10 round capacity. Kel-Tec Sub2000 does take Glock mags, giving you the 33rnd "assault clip" option. I trust mine to deal with HD and varmints and plinking.

WHat about an m44 mosin Nagant carbine, only five shots but it has a 16 inch barrel and is in 7.62 by 54R.

I'm nitpicking here, but the M-44 has a 20.25" barrel.

Kel-Tec SU-16 ~$450 (love mine)
Ruger Ranch Rifle Mini-14 $500+
.30 M1 Carbine - prices vary (love mine)

I am very sorry some of our posters here are getting WAY off of what the op asked. THE MAN ASKED ABOUT A CHEAP PISTOL CARBINE. How hard is that to understand? lever .30-.30s......old school russian bolts...ARs!? come on guys, He asked your opinion on cheap carbines. not what you just decide to throw in there.
Personally i have owned the newer hi point 995ts. I have said it before and i will say it again. IT's accurate, reliable, and dang fun to shoot. You WILL NOT regret buying one. I haven't tried the kel-tec. GOOD LUCK!

Really, I don't think you can go wrong with either kel-tec or hi-point for customer service. I'd give the nod to Hi-point for two reasons: First, price. Second, caliber. Hipoint comes in .45 caliber flavors. Rated to +P is just icing on the cake.

In terms of looks, they're both butt-ugly IMO, but at least you can take the money you saved and buy a decent looking aftermarket stock for the Hipoint.

I have decided to get the Hi Point and try it out. Not a big investment, and I'm thinking it'll be worth my time and money.

Thanks for the opinions!

Perhaps you should re-read the OP. I've quoted the pertinent part for you below:

Pistol caliber is specified where?
lever .30-.30s......old school russian bolts...ARs!? come on guys, He asked your opinion on cheap carbines. not what you just decide to throw in there.
Well, an old school Russian bolt, of the M-44 variety, IS a carbine. Lever action .30-30s with shorter barrels ARE carbines. Both can be found for less than the desired $500 price cap.

Most of the AR-15s on the market ARE carbines! There are quality AR carbines on the market now that are just over the desired price cap. The OP DID specify varmints & home defense. A .223 / 5.56 semi-auto carbine (be it an AR, KT SU-16, Ruger Mini-14, etc) loaded with ballistic tip ammo is ideal for both.

How hard is that to understand?

I was hesitant on a Hipoint Carbine but i love it sooooo much...it takes a hella beating and hella accurate....it does have a 9roundclip in .45acp but eats up all ammo even reloads..it is not picky. but you can always get two clips plus a stock clamp for it for $45 ish with free shipping. also can whidden the clip catch hole of a single stack 1911 .45acp clip and fits in a 4595

most people knock hipoint, but they dont know what they are talking about. just youtube for hipoint stress tests and people try to make them fail but they sill keep going where others failed long befor.

If the shop has one in, I am DEFINATELY getting the Hi Point. I havent seen one there lately, seems they've nearly sold out on them, so that can't be a bad sign!

Thanks again everyone!
