Pistol Caliber Carbine - Suggestions Needed

Firstly, I've only owned and shot the Hi-Point, out of all the ones you mention.

I bought mine (9mm) when they first came out, several years ago.

Right now it has over 5000 rounds through it, lots of cheapo ammo (Wolf and Blazer) as well as some +P+ Black Talons that I keep around for HD.

It has never had a failure of any kind.
Not. One. Failure.
I have never dissasembled it for cleaning, just a quick cleaning of the bore and action. Decided we're gonna see how long it can go before it starts to malfunction.

Yes, they're kinda ugly, and yes, they look and feel a bit cheap...But they are as reliable as bricks. Best $165 I ever spent on "gun stuff".

Most any one you'll find that says they're "junk" doesn't own one.

yes, they don't have high-cap mags, but you can dump and change a mag real quick (similar to a handgun).

Actually the only problem I have with it is the cost of mags---about $17 which is more than 10% of what I paid for the gun!

I own and shoot on a regualar basis a Mec-Tech conversion carbine in .45 ACP; a Marlin 1894 SS in .44 Mag; a Marlin 1894 C in .357 and a 9mm Ruger PC9. If I could have only one of these, it would be the 1894C.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but an M1 carbine would fit the bill. Sturdy, proven, accurate enough, and firing a pretty darn good round.

Ammo is $169 for 1000 rounds. There's enough aftermarket support, plenty of magazines, and aftermarket synthetic stocks if the wood doesn't suit you.Plus, you'll own a piece of history. Not to mention it's reliable and powerful enough for defensive purposes.

Hi-Point firearms are definetely NOT the most AP {Aesthetically Pleasing} out there, but they are accurate, and go BANG! on request.

I don't own any Hi-Points, but I have shot several of the 9MM & 45ACP pistols, and 2 of the carbines.

{pig-butt ugly is a term that comes to mind :p regarding Hi-Points} That being said, they do work, and work well.

how about a feather in 22, 9mm, or 45 acp? dont have one, but they look like a grease gun-- featherusa.com

+1 on the Marlin 1894c. I less than three this gun very much and I will be passing it down to my children, provided I have any.

I have seriously considered getting the Hi-Point 9mm Carbine not only because of the price, but because they're a local company (local being Ohio). With my sister getting a Walter, it'll be nice to share ammo with it as well.

the old feathers were pretty nice, the new feathers feel kinda flimsy and have sharp edges.

Go with a Marlin 1894 or Winchester '92 (NOT '94) in .357. Puma makes very good '92 clones in that chambering. You will find you get a very impressive FPS kick in the .357--much more than with the .40 out of a subgun knockoff. It really transforms the cartridge.

I have Marlin Camp Carbine in 9mm and .45, single shot handi-man in .357, Marlin SS 1894 in .44 and a Highpoint in 9mm. The Highpoint gets the most range time. Plus new shooters seem to like it the most.

an m1 roudn is far superior to these other rounds, also keltec makes a 223 pistol. but if you must have a pistol cal carbine, you can really trick out the keltecs, and they still wont weight 5 lbs. i had a bbl extension rail, buttstock extension, light, laser pointer velcroed on with push pad,red dot up top, . Very nice, plus super glued some ac pad tubing on the stock tube, you will need this, so you dont' beat the hell out of your face, because of your cheekweld.
sold it though.

Those are all great, but they're not as lethal as the dreaded baby killing AR-15!

I got mine complete with the Olympic Style 9mm upper for about $650.

Give the Hi Point carbines a try!

I have both the 995 and 4095 carbines. They are 100% reliable, easy to shoot and darn fun to shoot. You can pickup the gun, muzzle brake, but pad with two extra mags for $270 total with a fully loaded out gun.

M1 carbines are great, but you're going to need a lot of luck to get into a GI one for less than $700 that isn't beat to hell. Maybe a Plainfield version? I've heard they're decent, and prices (supposedly) are in the 2-300 range.

I'd suggest the Auto-Ordnance version, but I'm still waiting for it to arrive.

Thanks, Dacoda...

...You know, it occurs to me that since those short carbine/bullpup style guns must be registered as pistols in Michigan, they'd be legal for deer in the shotgun/pistol areas of the state, and would be legal to carry under the back seat of my truck...

I have a Ruger PC 9 and have fired thousands of rounds through it without fail. All brands .
Western and UAS make 20 and 30 rounders for it and I have never had a problem with either.
I plan on taking it when I go to the NRA's LEO Instructor Development Patrol Rifle School in December.
At 50 yards it will shred the head out of a silhouette target without misses.
I could not tell you what the group sizes are as I generally empty a couple of mags at a fairly fast pace, but it does group nicely.

i currently own a marlin 1894c, and it is a great gun. mine is outfitted with a red dot scope. i use it for javelina and coyote and keep it handy for campsite defense.

when i was younger, dad had a Marlin Camp Carbine in .45ACP. it accepted 1911 mags and was loads of fun and quite accurate, but prone to jams if not cleaned fairly often, or if the action got dirt or sand in it.

i like the kel-tec alot too, i've shot my buddy's a few times and it will likely be my next purchase. it ain't pretty, but it's handy, and 33 round glock mags are readily available.

I almost thought for a second looking at that picture that the PC9 took Hi Power mags. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.

My problem with 9mm Carbines that take pistol magazines is none of them are for handguns that I already have, and I'm not really interested in buying another handgun to match a carbine as I have several fine nines already. Now give me one that takes Hi Power mags, or CZ75/85 mags and I am there.

Tex

Texfire, didn't mean to imply with the picture that the magazines were interchangeable, but I can see that it could be taken that way. The intent was more of a 9x19, evil-black-gun thing.
