Hey Guys, I have two fine old High Standard Target Pistols, Models 106 and 107 I have two bricks of Federal Gold Medal Target Loads,1080 FPS. These loads and other standard velocity target loads do not function reliably in these guns. Are there replacement springs available? Or can the existing springs be shortened. This is some very accurate ammo, I would like to use it in these guns.PS I tried some in My Ruger MK2 today worked well. Thanks Chris

Welcome to the world of High Standard. I went through a H.S. phase a few years ago and ended up getting rid of them all. I know, some will say they work fine once you get the magazines "tuned", but I decided life was too short. So, out they went. :-(

Usually, tuning the mags involves adjusting the feed-lips. There is a tool that helps this process but I've done it without. Also, rimfirecentral.com has a High Standard sub-forum. There is a lot of good info over there.

This isn't my site but it looks like the info you need.

You did not really describe the problem . . . Whenever my high standards has light strikes I clean them and use a high quality grease/oil/lube. If there are feeding problems then the "tuning" of the magazine comes into play ... but once you have done it that should be it if you care for the mags. Lots of good info out there on the web - accurate guns - worth an aspirin or two IMO.

All of my Victors and Trophies became safe queens. They are just too finicky for me to enjoy them at the range. They are beautiful guns with amazing triggers and great accuracy though. You might be able to get springs from the new High standard company.

High Standard Function Problems.

Hey Guys, Sorry I was not clear about the problem I'm having. The loads I described do not have enough power to reliably eject the empty and pick up a new round from the mag.The function is fine with high velocity ammo. Thanks Again Chris

Because most High Standard pistols don't have a conventional "feed-ramp", they are particularly dependent on magazines having the correct lip configuration for reliable feeding. However, as RUT implied, if the pistol functions perfectly with hv ammunition, then problem (kind of) solved. I added the caveat "kind of" because I like to compete in Bullseye events where standard velocity, 'target" loads are preferred for (usually) greater accuracy and lighter recoil (important in the Timed and Rapid Fire stages unique to Bullseye shooting).

Ah, might that possibly be due to the post-1965 HS's being made for Hi-Velocity ammo?

That being said, there are ways of making them function with SV...polishing the slide & rails is a good start...

You can't have it both ways.

If its set up for high-speed ammo and functions fine like you said it does?
It may not function with standard velocity, as you found out.

If you change the recoil spring to a lighter weight to get it to function with standard velocity?
Hi-Speed will beat the crap out of it.

Take your pick, make up your mind, decide which you want to shoot, then stick with it.

What rc just said

I bought a new one maybe ten years ago, in Houston. Went to the range with some CCI ammunition. Had lots of FTF. Thought I got a $1000 crap pistol. Since they were made in Houston, I called and took it by. The owner was nice, and explained the pistols are target guns, designed and set up for Eley Tenex ammo. Since I rarely shoot $15 a box ammo at the range, I ordered the heavier springs from Wolfe.

No problems now. I kept the soft springs for when I want to impress someone, using the Eley ammo.

I would avoid high velocity ammo even with a new spring. These pistols have a reputation for frame cracks if you beat them too much with HV ammo.

If this were mine:

-I would replace the recoil spring with a fresh one. It's possible someone put in the wrong spring and that is the problem you're seeing.

-Use SV ammo only.

-Adjust the mags that don't work. There is plenty of info on how to do this online.

It's designed to use standard velocity, no reason to batter it with high velocity ammo.

Plexreticle is correct, from what my research of a couple of years ago revealed...a very good warning to heed. Lots of cracked frame High Standards out there, or at least enough to make you not use hv ammo.

I have a mid-60's High Standard Duramatic (which is a plinker, not a serious target gun), and it can handle the hv ammo, but most other models can't. My research also revealed that aftermarket magazines can be very difficult to get to work right. And my own experience seems to verify that. Misfeeds galore. Make sure you have original High Standard mags. Best wishes.

Find the full answers above.
The mag lip adjuster is super simple to make by simply cutting a slot with a hack saw in a bolt head "edge/side".

I bought mine in 1974-ish and have shot a bazillion rds through it of many kinds. It won't shoot Winchester anything, likes most CCI 40gr anything and can shoot Federal 40gr RN most anything.

Thanks You Guys, I believe my guns are mid 70's sounds like they were made for HV ammo. I guess I'll shoot that standard vel. ammo in My Mod. 52, likes it well. Thanks again Chris.

SV

I have a Victor, made in the Hamden factory in 1973. i have shot maybe a bazillion rounds through this gun....all SV. Very, Very, Very few FTFs.
CCI, Federal 711, Eley Club.

I have gone through High Standard ownership a few times, over the course of thirty years. I always bought them because I respect the traditional craftsmanship and history of the brand.

Then I got frustrated with magazine availability, magazine tuning, and the frame cracking potential with HV ammunition.

Worst of all, I live in CT, within 20 miles of Hamden and East Hartford, and my favorite LGS always has half a dozen classic High Standards available.

Big Shrek,

I designed and made the gun box. I made deer antler knobs shown on the bbl vice and the cleaning rod handle.
Used an old military briefcase's combination locks.
I used it for Bullseye shooting in the 70s.
A small scope was mounted on the

I hate to send someone elsewhere, but John Stimson & the guys over at RFC
(rimfire central) are pretty much the ones to ask about specific High Standard issues.
Heck, if one just reads thru the old posts about their specific models, covers 99.9% of issues...
without ever having to ask...
