High standards deserve a little love.

My High Standard Victor was the best .22 semi auto I’ve ever handled, sadly, gone.

I can’t think of anything made today, outside of small production dedicated target pistols, that’s any better.

Really like mine. Got it used with a space gun barrel, which was rusted at the muzzle. Got an aftermarket barrel from Connecticut Precision Chambering, made from a 5" PacNor blank. Also had CPC backbore the space gun barrel. Like a fool, sold the barrel; it was shooting good. Finding factory grips and mags were little victories. Imho, Hamden guns are hard to find but mags are even harder. Still need to finish whittling on the grips. 2DC0F24A-4A86-4A36-93C4-335C7BA88F9E.jpeg
 
My father bought a High Standard Model C, which was the 22 Short version of the 22 Long Rifle Model B, from Hudson's Sporting Goods in New York City, back in the 1930's. I still have it, but I don't have a good picture of it. It's still a good accurate gun, but it has one of High Standard's patent evasions of the Colt Woodsman takedown method, so I don't want to take it apart for cleaning much.

Dad bought a High Standard because Colt Woodsmans (Woodsmen?) were expensive, and he always preferred good value for money over a fancy brand name. He got the C because 22 Shorts were $.02 cheaper per box then - $0.19/box compared to $0.21. That was according to Dad. I have no idea how to check on 22 ammo prices in Dover, New Jersey in 1937. :)

(I wonder if Longs were $0.20/box?)

Owned a Colt Woodsman w/6" barrel made in the 20's. Wafer thin grip panels. Sold it in the 80's and bought a Colt Government Series 80 with the funds.
Had a high Standard Victor and a friend talked me out of it. Obtained a Supermatic from an older gentleman in the 80's. Why Why Why did I let that one go.
At least I still have the Series 80.
 
I have a Supermatic that I got fairly cheap. It misfires on standard ammo about every 4th shot. Maybe it needs to have springs replaced.
 
I have a Victor. It's far from pristine, very well used and was D&T'd for a Dot. Unfortunately, I now shoot lefty due to to arthritis in my right elbow. I'd like to get some left handed grips but haven't been able to find any. For that reason I don't shoot it as much as I should, but every time I do I marvel how sweet the trigger is and how well balanced it is.

Any suggestions from the group?
 
Great guns...and that's a particularly fine collection, Senor! I believe that's a Victor down at the 6 o'clock position. I shot one for several years back in the late 70's in Connecticut's .22 LR NRA Bullseye league. We had 6-8 teams that competed every week. BTW, the top level Colt factory team shot Hi Standards to a man!

I never warmed up to the Victor's grip angle somehow...sold it for what I had in it and bought a Smith 41...but quickly found out that I shot the Hi Standard better...ah the learning curve of a callow youth.

I got a Supermatic as part of a trade. It's in fair shape with some pitting. It misfires fairly often using regular .22 LR.
I am not crazy about it at all. I much prefer my Colt Targetsman and Ruger Standard models.

Lefty also. Same issues finding lefty grips for guns with right handed thumb rests that stick way out there. My cheapskate solution is to find used aftermarket right handed grips and whittle on them. Theres a pic of a "not finished" one in an earlier post here. I have a couple of Pachmyr rubber grips; don't need. Can post an ad here. LMK.

Sorry to hear of the malfunctioning guns. Hope you guys can get the guns fixed. Imho the citations and victors will hold its own against anything at the 25 and 50 yard line. I'm on my 4th HS. My other .22 target gun is a marvel conversion. Both are good.

Nope. The "space gun" is more of a novelty. I would like a 10-× however. But since high standard of Montana is producing a higher quality example at a better price I'll hold out. I do want a slant grip Victor. The holy grail of high standards
