My newly (used) purchased (Grade C) HK PSP slide fails to lock open after the last round in the magazine. It is supposed to do so.

So, I figured....a defective magazine. So, I ordered a couple of extra mags.

Out of three mags, I have one of three where the slide locks open after the last round. The other two do not.

Am I thinking correctly.....is my problem a magazine problem....or is it another problem?

I wouldn't want to continue ordering $50-60 magazines if my thinking is not correct, would I?

The followers are metal and probably not worn out if you have new mags...even used, they are pretty robust. I'd say the problem lies in the slide catch. If you remove the left grip panel you can inspect the part. These are all used so some wear is expected. Look here to see what the slide catch looks like. {Link didn't work} see below.

Be careful removing the grips. The rear edge is slotted so the grip panel must be pushed to the front a bit before removing. To do so, the the top front edge must be pulled carefully up and out of its cutout.

edit;

That link didn't work... go here to the last post for an open link.

Armourers guide page 26. Look at the part labeled B for wear and the actual catch.

Hope this helps.

Good info. I'd clean and lube the slide catch before I did anything else. Chances are there is a bit of rust or grit restraining it's freedom of movement.

Clean the mags and install new extra power mag springs from Wolff.

Crazy thought--it could also be that the notch in the slide is rounded, or that you are riding the slide release while shooting.

If neither of those are the case, I'd replace mag springs and continue diagnostics from there.

that you are riding the slide release while shooting.

none of the P7 family of pistols has a slide release.

like most pistols, HK pistols have a slide stop...their forward thinking design prevents shooters from using it to release the slide

from slide lock, the slide is released by squeezing the cocking lever

I'm not sure I follow your logic here. What do you think is actually released when you squeeze the handle? As far as the gun is concerned , whether it's a lever or a handle... the exact same thing happens. HK is one of the manufacturers that write's their manuals specifying using the slide release lever to load rounds.

Mag springs are cheap, but if a spring is strong enough to feed rounds reliably, it is probably OK enough to move a lever up 1/8" too. Just my way of looking at it.

i understand that the squeeze cocker releases the slide and the slide stop locks it to the rear...being pushed either by the follower or a finger. are you saying that that is incorrect?

The intimation that somehow being released by a sqeeze cock mechanism is different or superior than thumbing a standard slide release lever is what I find illogical. Whether in my P7 or my P2000 it is the same principal... a piece of metal moves and the slide slams forward. I see no difference in doing it with three fingers or one thumb.

you are correct, it is both...just as releasing the slide by pulling the slide back is superior to depressing the slide stop.

it is as different as releasing a trigger by pressing it as opposed to jerking it

if you can't see the difference/advantage of one method over the other, i can only assume that we view the use of a handgun from different perspectives

Is the gas port Clean?

If your gas port is dirty you may not get the slide all the way back as it should.
