Hello all,

I was about to give my new 642 a nice cleaning and lube when I realized that I have no idea how to get to mechanicals inside the gun :scrutiny:

The SW manual is pretty vague and I can't find any info on their website either :uhoh:

Do I need to lube the firing mechanism and if so how?

Thanks,
Brent...

To get oil in all the right spots, you can just remove the sideplate. If you don't want to take the time, just open the cylinder and put a drop oil on the bolt and hand. Then remove the grips and put a drop on the top of the mainspring and let it run down to the stirrup. Another drop inside the the rebound slide and a last one under the slide. Don't forget to lube the ejector and yoke areas.

Dry fire a few times, wipe off the excess oil, and you're done.

Good Luck...

Joe

Probably the reason that the manual is "vague" on the subject is that they don't think people need to be pulling the sideplate off all the time. I have a 442 that I have had for about 9 years now, carried daily and shot reasonably often. I am qualified to do it, but have never had occasion to detail strip the gun. Maybe in five or six more years.

As I recall, S&W offers "free lifetime maintenance" on newer guns, although you have to pay shipping to get it there.

If it isn't broke...

Thanks for the replies!

Am I correct in assuming from your posts that will only need to remove the sideplate once a year or so to do a thorough clean and lube?

Thanks,
Brent...
