I am going to start loading for 243,and I am kicking around what bullet to use..It will be mainly for deer, but maybe an occasional varmint..Should I use the Sierra 85 gr hollow point ,or a 100 gr soft point..I have never used a hollow point (except 22) for anything, but it seems like it is a well liked deer bullet for the 243..What advantage over a pointed soft point would I gain, and what would I give up?.

I've always used a pointed soft point or something like an accubond or similar. I've actually never used a hollow point for anything hunting. I'm also curious as to what others say. For .243 I use the Sierra Pro-Hunter SPT in 100 gr.

I also never considered a hollow point a deer bullet, and thought them to be for varmints, but I was in Walmart, and they had only Hornady V Max,and the Sierra 85 gr Seirra ProHunter HPBT which I figured was also a varmint bullet..I can go to the sporting goods store and get better selection, but they are so high that I buy little from them..I usually wait till I need to buy enough stuff to justify paying shipping and order from Midway..Well anyway just out of bordom I googled the 85gr hpbt, and evedentaly they have a pretty loyal following for medium game in the 243..Also Midway has some blems that I think are Hornady 100 gr SST that I thought about..They looked pretty long though .My rifle has a 1 in 9.25 twist so I think they would be alright ,they are about $20 per 100, so If I do order bullets would the 100gr SST be better for me than a 100 gr soft point?

I've tagged some two dozen bucks with the Sierra 85-grain HPBT. The big "However" is that I've only taken head/neck shots or cross-body heart/lung shots. No angling shots. It's a blow-up bullet, and I doubt the penetration.

But it makes a double handful of mush in the heart/lung area.

In general, the bullets of 95 to 105 grains are more reliable for all-around use on Bambi.

I shoot the vast majority of my deer in the neck also, but if it's a blow up bullet I probably will use something else..

The hpbt is a gameking and it will work just fine, before I get too in depth on this as .243 is one of my most trusted and favorite cartridges to load for, I believe your savage has 20-22" depending on the model? Skip the sst they are NOT worth it, if you're unlucky enough to be presented with a shot under 100 yds, that bullet will probably NOT penetrate reliably, I would trust the 85 gameking over them until b.c. becomes an issue at or above 300 yds where MOST ppl shouldn't even be aiming. In another .243 thread, I shared the results of a lovely lady throwing a 100 gr Sierra pro hunter (flatbase) at a decent sized muley buck at about 50 yds from a near Max load of h1000 (over 2900 fps) from a very hard quartering to angle that blasted his vitals to bits and exited the far side mid ribcage with a piece of either bullet or bone fragment exiting the far ham. For a high velocity game, THAT is a tough bullet and it's carrying enough speed and energy that I would not hesitate to use one on a deer at 400 if I had to, but I'm pretty decent at using my terrain and can usually get to 250. Nosler will warn you on factory ballistic tips that shots at 50 yds are not recommended, having tested BOTH bullets, the sst has an even thinner jacket. You said varmints but didn't specify which flavor, I found something new to try for hide saving, but if you wanna just blow stuff up, I recommend playing with 70gr varmageddon or similar. Sierra makes an 85 gr flat base that has been super accurate and FUN but just tough enough to fall perfectly between varmint and game hunting, I would use em on deer if I had no other choice with the knowledge that they are NOT the 100 gr pro hunter but I'm not gonna throw them at a yote for hide purposes either. There are bonded and copper solids available for you, I have generally shunned Barnes but nosler and hornady offer coppers and that gmx is exciting at close range, I don't know if I would trust it in deer at 300 unless I wrecked a shoulder, the etip has a bit larger cavity that I'm toying with and ballistics show that my velocity should make it feasible past 300. If it passes all my tests, I will definitely be torn between it and the 100 pro hunter, that flat base is soooooooo accurate! If I shop online. I usually find better prices at midsouthshooterssupply.com than midway unless midway is running a good sale. The big problem with the .243 I have is that there are too many choices to play with, the prohunter will always be my "ol reliable" but it's too painful to wonder about this one or that one at 3400fps or either of these 2 at 2990 etc etc etc. That savage twist should stabilize every hunting bullet you'll ever need, so enjoy her!

ETA if I could not for whatever reason, get a 100 pro hunter I'd throw the 95 partitions at em.

Yes it is a 22 inch. On varmints I meant the occasional grounghog,or coyote.I don't care about the hide.

In 2002 I went to north west Montana on a elk and deer guided deer hunt. My mule deer was about 11 years old . My guide ranged him at 440 yards . Hit him the first time and he went two steps and stopped. Hit him again and down he went. My 300 win mag, is a stainless number one and 100 yard will shot the same hole , 2 1/8 in groups at 300 yards . I hope my feather wt, model 70 in 300wsm shoots as good. Really looking forward to reloading. Hornady 165 gr.sst

I don't believe in over kill. Never lose a deer, even at a couple hundred yards blood is easy to find when where the deer was standing isn't.

I went ahead and had the local sporting goods store order me some 100gr Sierra ProHunters ,and was tickled with the $24.99 price, which is about the same price as Walmart wants for them 87gr hpbt bullets..

As a neophyte Western (Wyoming) hunter back in the '70s, I saw the locals using 87 gr. HPs in .257 Roberts to drop mule deer and antelope on the spot. What I didn't realize was they were only taking broadside lung shots. I came home and tried the same combo on an Alabama whitetail. I made a shoulder shot and the bullet blew up on his shoulder. I trailed him for 30 minutes before I got another shot but this one was in the rib cage. That's the first & last time I ever used a lightweight hollow point bullet on anything larger than a coyote.

Heads up for ya, about Sept and pre-Christmas to post-Christmas you can usually score a Sierra sale of $20-22 for that same box, (not a big difference but it will add up eventually, I try to stay ahead). The price vs the partitions got me to ordering 50 85 gr partitions, 50 95 gr, 100 pros, 100 85 gameking, shoulda just put the money into the 95 and 100s cuz I still have most of the gamekings left and haven't even opened the 85 partitions (though I'm thinking of two people who will love and greatly benefit from them for a decent deer load), still got 350 85 gr varmint flat bases cuz they were ridiculously cheap on sale and fun to plink with, laser accurate as you would expect but now working up an experiment to see if I can destroy a coyotes innards without touching the outtards so they're kinda just pdog and target loads for the kids now.
They might be a good place to start for a varmint load if you decide the 70 gr is too light.

20161208_185809.jpg The 95gr SST bullet has been my go-to in the 243 for a while now. So far it's two for two on deer. It explodes the insides and still exits. I use the SST bullet with other calibers too. It has never failed to disappoint when used in my 243s, 257 Roberts, 300 Blackout, 270, and 50cal muzzleloader.

For next year I've already loaded up some 85gr Sierra BTHP GameKings to try after hearing and seeing a lot of good results.

They are sounding pretty good to me too.I'll buy them next time

My suggestion would be to stay away from the hollow points. The only animal I ever lost to the 243 was after a hollow point bullet one of the gun writers wrote glowingly about back in the 70's...
100 gr soft point, my rifle's have all got along very well with the Hornady interloc bullet, Speer makes good ones , and the Remington corloc in the bulk pacs are a real hidden gem.
H414 and 4350 have both shown the best in accuracy and velocity for me.
