I would like to keep a handgun easily available yet not so easily available to young'ns and bad guys. I know I'll get all the you can't have it out of your control, but I need my wife to be able to get to or it and yes, even my 14 year old if need arises. Bad guys won't wait wait til me or the wife are home.

Besides keeping it on me or in one of the very advertised clocks, any ideas?

There are a number of companies that make small safes just for handguns. I believe Fort Knox brand is making some that use the Simplex mechanical lock system. I believe this is the best solution for your needs. Get one of these safes and anchor it in your closet or even in your nightstand, desk, etc.

Lock box

If your not wearing it [ my first choice ] then a lock box is my only choice due to legal stuff.

Remember that your children will have friends over, that alone is THE reason for a secured location.

Gunvault makes a number of biometric or "fingerprint" vaults that sit nicely inside drawers or bolt under desks or tables for under 200$. They can be programmed with many different users fingerprints and allow almost instant access should the need arise in a particular room that you spend the most time in. Remember, a gun locked up in the master bedroom does no good should you be a floor or two away if someone beaks in. My wife and I spend most of our time in the living room and kitchen of out split level so we bolted a gunvault under one of our end tables in the middle of the room for easy access. That was our solution to our shared problem and we are pretty happy with it.

One with a mechanical push-button lock is quick, reliable, and you don't need to worry about batteries or electricity. Most that use this type of lock are heavier construction and should be a little more secure if you decide to always keep a HD gun in it for you and your wife to access.

I keep my HD gun in mine all the time and it is bolted down solid. If it is hidden, that would be another plus as long as it is still easily accessible. Mine is in my bedroom since that is most likely where I will be if needed. When awake, I always pocket carry around the house.
