I agree... Range time and see what she is comfortable with!

But here is a suggestion to throw in the box that offers flexibility!

Just my 2 cents!

Its a Rossi 45-70/.410

Shotgun

20 ga, Double barrel or pump, 20" barrel. She shoots trap so she should be familiar with shotguns. Cuts down on how precise you need to be shooting, because when you actually do decide to aim that gun at a fellow human being, chances are your gonna be shaking really bad.

Since you've already indicated she's going to defend from a fixed position I suggest training with a mock up of the room/hallway so she has the fields of fire practiced from the hall, doorway and within the room. It could even be fun with air soft and a live "target".

I read somewhere that every young woman, on her 16th birthday, should be given a .357 magnum, 1000 rounds of downloaded ammo, and a gift certificate to a self-defence course.

Not a bad idea.

I would add some malfunction drills. Talk to her about clearing various malfunctions and sneak some dummy rds in every so often. One could just be a dummy rd with no charge and no primer and you could also make a dummy rd and put enough crimp on it to swell the brass at the shoulder (that one will lock it up pretty good).

Good luck.

Please feel free to let me know what you think as that is the reason I am asking.
I make it a point to teach new female shooters, young and old, to use the AR 15.
They enjoy it and quickly become quite good with it.

20 guage pump with either 2 3/4" or 3" Magnums.
Large shot (BB or larger), and/or buckshot and possibly a slug.

The beauty in a good pump shotgun is that it can be loaded with various shells, beginning with ones that will incapicitate but possibly not kill.

I certainly would not want to get hit anywhere in a house by a 20 gauge, I don't care what shot you use, any of it would be horrendous. At ten to fifteen feet away, a 20 gauge modified or full choke would make a nasty hole.:barf:

I would have to say her trap Ga, with #4 Buckshot over the penetration of #00 Buckshot. The same Ga as what she shoots normally is conducive to mussel memory, and the lower shot number increases the amount of lead in the air. Which increases the likely hood of her hitting the target from a hip fire situation. Plus #4 shot is less likely to travel through plaster and / or slats and still be lethal. At least it is a quick start until you can better train or obtain a more suited firearm. Your ( as in the pare of you) confidence and comfort is most important, after all isn't that the whole point; to be confident and comfortable in your own home?

I'm surprised the number of people still recommending a shotgun when his daughter is already familiar (and very good) with the AR.

Stick with what she knows and prefers. If she wants to stick with the AR, then that would be my suggestion. I'm not on the camp that says shotguns are best for HD, whats best is what you shoot and handle the best whether is be a handgun, rifle, etc.

beginning with ones that will incapicitate but possibly not kill

....I still do not know why this is recommended....if one needs to fire in self defense, understand that saving yourself comes before saving the threat. This is a young girl that we are talking about, and I do not see why one would want a round that *might* save an attackers life by not stopping him immediately, and at the same time put her in more danger....

The best way to stop someone is to mess up their central nervous system or make them rapidly loose a lot of blood. It just so happens that these are also excellent ways to kill somebody. If you aren't doing both these things, then the target has a nasty tendency to keep coming.

I would let her choose between…whichever she preferred

I fixed this for you.

Let her keep onhand whatever SHE is comfortable with. Even if it's one of her trap guns, I'd rather leave her with a trap gun she is proficient with than an AR/AK/carbine/12ga/whatever that YOU and a bunch of people on the internet think is best for her, but she has no experience with or desire to shoot.

The best gun is the one a person will shoot. A lot.
