I thought all the bugs were resolved with the press and was looking forward to reloading .223’s . The small rifle case plate arrived today, I installed it and started loading. For the 223’s I switched the powder to IMR 4895 which is extruded. About every 6 shells the powder measure drop tube jams and powder is all over the shell plate and jams up the primer tray, etc. Is there some secret to using extruded powder with the hornady. Always an issue.

I use a digital dispenser with extruded.

Try H335 or CFE223 or AR Comp if you can find it. The LNL makes life very easy for production work given the right parameters (and experience will certainly help), but for some powders, single-stage is the way to go. Check out these powder reviews 5.56 (natoreloading.com)

JoJo - I ruined a Lyman powder meter trying to chop extruded powder.

IMR 4895 is a very long stick powder and doesnt function that well in a rotary drop, except for ironically maybe a Lee. They will tend to cut grains which might crush cases, jam, bridge, etc. Switch to a ball or short cut extruded and youll be fine.

“Your Lock-N-Load® Powder Measure has been treated with a rust preventative that must be removed prior to use. We recommend that you clean and degrease all metal parts with Hornady® One Shot® Gun Cleaner and Lube.”
^^^^Have you done this?

Also after cleaning rub powder tube out with a dryer sheet and run two shots of graphite through the powder drop. Done for life mate, after every use empty powder from hopper and blow out with can air. I have never had a problem with the powder drop. Watch highboy videos on the press on YouTube..

I bought my first LNL because I had often read about how much better their measures worked with them than the Dillon measures and I was given a 20lb keg of IMR 3031.

Long story short, it didn’t like extruded powders any better and the smaller hole in the mouth of a .223 case just exacerbates the bridging problems.

Ball powders are the key to progressive happiness.

I have learned anything reloading has a learning curve. Part of the reason I reload is to problem solve by experimentation. Learning how to set up dies, press, and other tools or how they work. Also the work figuring out a load and associated brass prep for a certain firearm. I also realize some do this just to make ammo to shoot and easily get flustered when things go wrong. My advise is to step back take a breath and investigate the problem, you will feel better when you get things running smoothly in the end.

That, x1000.

I will load IMR powders on my ProJector, with the Hornady drop, but it's only in .30+ cartridges, I have switched to H335 for anything under .30, or it gets hand weighed and dropped.

I use a Redding 10X, a Redding BR-30, and the Hornady powder measure that uses the same basic design on my LNL. I modded the two Reddings to work on it with my linkage, and the Hornady uses the linkage supplied with the LNL.

Small kernel stick powders work well, as do ball powders. N-133, H-322, even IMR-4895. The shape of the powder drop tube and the part that the "funnel" that sets on the case mouth have a lot to do with the success of using stick powders.
