I have come up with a few thing and would like to here from others that have a Hornady progresive or even a dillon that makes thing easier. First thing I hear a lot about primer problems. Keep a can of air (like what you would use on your computer) to blow out the primer feed. This will also blow out the powder dispenser very well just do it outside. next I put a Dillon powder check die this is something that Hornady could take notesa on. This powder check doesn't require you to look at it. If I wanted to look to make sure I had powder I would just look in the case 100_1529.jpg

Next Lee FCD put it in station 5 and pull the handle till it just touches the die using a regular screwdriver push the ejector wire just enough that the die will scape by it this will leave a mark on the die grind that area away then mark across the die bushing and a small mark on the press with a sharpie this will make it easier to make sure you get it in the same every time.

Next comes a bullet tray I heard somebody say that the Hornady isn't a arrognomic as the Dillon cause it doesn't have a bullet tray. If you get the case feeder it cames with a base that has a Akrobin hanger on it. I took the old one and cut it off bolted it to a piece of diamond plate and mounted it to the case feeder mount. The yellow bin in the picture is a little big just haven't gotten another bin. I made it to basically sit on top of the loaded road catcher when I have bullets in it. This also acts as a back board for those cases that like to fly away. 100_1639.jpg

anything that you think up that might help or maybe something that you would like to see. Throw your thoughts out there and lets see what others can come up with.

That Dillon powder check die would look better on a blue press

Some good ideas :)

Dollar for dollar it looks better on the hornady thats why I no longer have a 550 cause unless somebody here gets real creative and puts a fifth station on it. Any how this isn't abou ford and chevy, hornady and dillon. It's about helping out. as far as that goes keep that can of air if you have the 550 cause it has many the same problems if not a little more with the primer system hit it with the air every 10-30rds when you do a powder weigh and it will continue to run great

The architect Lamps are nice also I put a 55 wat holagen bulb in it and it lights things up real nice. Its also easy to swing out of the way or over to another area.

Jenrob,

Good ideas you have there. One can also use the RCBS lockout die as an alternative to the Dillon powder measure. It too does not require a visual inspection of the die. Though it doesn't have an audible alarm, it does have a lockout feature that locks the press when the powder is high or low.

I use a wooden platform I built to hold both a large bullet bin and a large cartridge bin. I also have a large case bin as well, because I've never needed the production provided by the casefeeder. By large I mean the six inch instead of the 3 inch bins. Works real nice for me. I like your methods as well.

Great job.

Dave

Something else I learned. When setting up your charge weight use a case to do it don't rotate the rotor without pushing the powder tru expanders up or the powder bushings up. If you don't you will get more inconsistent drops cause some of the powder will fall on the expander or bushing then the next load might knock some off. I found this out after pulling the powder dispenser off and had powder smashed on the bottom of the drop tube and on the top of the expander die.

Heres my solution to the 9mm ejection problem and FCD problem:

I like the bullet tray. I think I'll make up something like that.

Do you fill that huge akrobin? When I get my little one overflowing it hinders primer seating when the weight bends the bracket and gets in the way of the ram.

Jon

No I can't fill it. I got this one from a friend to use so I would know where to mount everything. Im going to get the large akrobin like hornady has.
I took a pair of pliers and a rag so as to not scrtch it and bent the arm nown just a little. Im thinking about trying to drill a small hole in it about where the ram hits it and running a piece of wire through it and conect it to the press in a way that it would hold it from bending up into the ram. Might look into that tomorrow.

Yes, if you use the larger six inch sized akro style bin, you'll definitely need to give it good support or your bracket will sag when it begins to fill up. That's why I went with wood instead of metal. I had more woodworking equipment than I had metalworking stuff at the home shop at the time.

Dave
