Horrible ND Situation

Thank God she survived and will recover. Sounds like a bad set of circumstances. He dropped and it discharged. At least according to him
Can’t imagine my own child being shot

What shotgun do you need to put on half cock to load?
How do you even 'half-cock' a shotgun? The only 'shotguns' I know of that would even operate that way are derrinigers and Taurus Judge type .410 pistols, the 28 ga. Taurus revolving shotgun, and the Win. and Henry .410 lever actions. Every other shotgun design I know of either the breech is open or closed, and the trigger mechanism has no 'half cock.?
Glad the girl will recover, hope dad feels horrible about it, and I hope she finds a competent firearms safety instructor.

Well, there is a possibility of it being a 22 rifle with 22 birdshot cartridges. That would explain why the victim is still alive. Believing what was written in a newspaper is a crap shoot. Newspaper people can substitute the word "cleaning" for the word "clearing" as they have no idea what the latter term means, and they figure to correct an error for the public.
The only way to find out what really happened is to be at the trial and get the facts from the people that were there.
If I was shot in the abdomen with a shotgun from across the room, I'd be dead. This story, as written in the news, smells of inaccuracies.

His story sounds utterly bogus. Half cock to load it? Teaching her gun safety while pointing it at her? Somehow it went off?

Good for the judge to slap him with bail. My bet is he was playing bad ass with a gun and negligently discharged it with his finger in the trigger. Cleaning, teaching, and slipped are most likely fabrications to replace “playing around showing off with loaded gun and finger on trigger pointing it at family members to intimidate them into compliance with obsessive control issues.” Just a wild ass guess.

I feel horrible about/for the child, but I even feel a bit of sorrow for the idiot who shot her. Poor fellow, it's hard to go through life careless and stupid.

His story sounds utterly bogus.
Yea, it does, he was more likely just being stupid and careless, and deserves a bit of jail time/really good scare from the judge.

A hammer gun so old as to not have rebounding locks.
Not common and most likely a typical ND tall tale reported by a Left Liberal journalism major.

I was looking up the Winchester 1897. They were known to have problems with wearing out sears. My Dad was on a hunting trip and he was in a cabin with his buddies. One has an 1897. It was placed in a corner, loaded with the muzzle up. It tipped over, hit the floor and went off. I doubt it was on 1/2 cock, probably fully back with the safety on I can imagine if it was at 1/2 cock and hit on the hammer it might go off if it landed just right

An 1897 pump has no "safety" other than the half cock.
A worn sear, or one broken by the fall would do it.
So would a hammer all the way down on a loaded chamber.
So would a "false half cock."

Wasn’t talking about loading....we now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
