Hot .44 Special loads in Ruger BH

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

My go to load for 44 SPL was 7.7 gr Unique with a 250 gr SWC bullet. I shot thousands of these in my Colt SAA (new). No problem. It has a pretty good thump for a Spl. I would hesitate to go more than this in a special casing. It is considered over maximum now in the new manuals. I never used 2400 for this cartridge, so no suggestions there.

You will enjoy shooting a load of this strength in your Blackhawk. Try some.

Sheep, reread my post, #7. I read the OP and my reply was directed to him about my experienced with a range that bans magnum ammo. My second post was responding to the worry of getting "hot" ammo into "weak" guns. Perhape you got me mixed up with someone else?

Sorry, mdi. It was your post #16 I was thinking of in my post #20 as a standalone post without mitigation from your earlier (#7) post.

The O.P. was talking about 44 Special brass (essentially overloaded to the point of being) unsuitable for most 44 special firearms, even if they were in good condition. So, it has nothing to do with the firearm and everything to do with the power of the load stuffed into the (inappropriately headstamped) cartridge.

I did not mean to offend, but only to clarify. Apparently, did not do as well as I had hoped.

Thanks for the opportunity to re-clarify.

On the other hand, perhaps I actually did misunderstand you. If so, I apologize.

I've never loaded hot .44Spl loads so I can't give you any load specifics. I do load very warm .38Spl self defense ammo. My wife carries them in her Colt Det. Spl. To keep them seperate from our blasting ammo, I label the boxes they're stored in. Also, I put a small smear of red fingernail polish around the primer. It comes off during tumbling. Idiot proof, even for me.

In my opinion, which ain't worth a plug nickel, is load only standard 44 Special loads in a 44 Special case (same for 45 Colt). If you want 44 Magnum level loads, get a 44 Magnum and load 44 Magnum loads in 44 Magnum cases..

I feel it is not worth the risk getting the hot loads in a weak revolver.

Not everyone will agree.

I agree
