How can I love the 1911 design but not the guns?

Hope that makes sense. I love the feel, design, balance, of the model 1911. Doesn't matter who makes it. Whether its the Taurus 1911 or the Wilson CQB Elite. Love them. However I never really enjoy shooting them nearly as much as buying them. Bought a new one a week ago and been salivating over it all week. Shot it today. It was reliable, Accurate and only got smoother with every round. But i didn't enjoy it as much shooting it as I had holding it and looking upon it.

Dunno. For me the 1911 was the first handgun I ever shot so it's what I am comfortable with.

I had close to 10,000 rounds through a 1911 before I ever fired ANY other handgun (was shooting IPSC in high school) so it's just ingrained in me I guess.

Maybe its the narrow grip? More felt recoil because of less surface area to spread it across? What do you not enjoy?

Takes a little time, then..

...

You're "both" going thru a break-in period, that's all..

300 rounds more, and you and your gun should smooth out nice.. :)

doubt it

this is not my first 1911 and likely wont be my last. sent several hundreds of rounds down range with my Springfield, colt, and taurus. i think they just intrigue me more than anything because i love military history and the like. just dont do it for me in live fire, don't kill me but i like shooting glocks better, butlove the looks of a 1911, maybe they just don't work for me? Alas... I think there is a name for repeating the same action over and over expecting different results...Insanity maybe?

I understand. I get sorta the same thing with a Glock. Good, solid weapon...reliable...as safe as a gun can be as long as ya keep your finger off the trigger...and even the looks and ergonomics grew on me. But I cannot wrap my hand around one to save me outta torment.

Revolvers were...and are...my first love, by the way. Partial to K-frames, but I can find somethin' to like about almost any wheelgun. So...Welcome aboard, neighbor.

For some shooters, 1911s are more of an infatuation. I'm better with my Glocks in many respects, but boy do I love handling my 1911s. They have a fantastic feeling in the hand and they do offer some timeless superior qualities. I just think theory and practice are not the same.

I like the looks of them much better than I like shooting them, the 1911 grip really doesn't fit my hand well at all. I much prefer the CZ75 and clone grips to a 1911.

My friend wishes his 1911's would run too! Considering the cheapest one is over 3X the price of my .45 Witness, he's not happy that I can crank through mag after mag without a hitch, while he's lucky to get through one without a hangup. If it were me, they would be gone. I don't want a gun that isn't 100%relliable, even if it's just a gun to shoot targets with.

Revolverman:
The secret, awful truth about all shooting -- regardless of the particular weapon -- is that it is a chore. It's loud (to the point of permanent hearing loss with no protection), dirty (heavy-metal toxic, in fact), expensive, and -- if you do it long enough at a stretch -- fatiguing to the muscles. There's the lengthy clean-up procedure, the initial expenditure of investment capital (buying the gun), the cost of ranges (for the city-bound) and ammo. And some have suggested that our sport can be dangerous if participated in carelessly.

Is it worth it? Need you ask?
Is it necessary? Same answer.

But do I sometimes derive as much pleasure out of non-live fire play as I do out of a day at the range? You bet. Field stripping them, polishing them, tinkering with them, dry-firing them (with all suitable precautions) or even simply fondling them... God help me, I love it all.

I believe if you think about it, you'll find the same is true of your Glocks, but maybe less pronounced.

I love the 1911.

But....I despise front serrations, MIM parts, light rails and most of the useless junk the current manufacturers pile on current production 1911.

I have resisted buying another 1911 ( I have a mid 80's LW Commander) until I can afford to get an old-school Colt round top Series 70 and have modified just for me.

i think guns are like cars; i love the aesthetics of a rolls royce or a classic chevy impala lowrider, but i'd rather drive a a volvo or dodge caravan. call me crazy. the same goes for guns. i, too, love the aesthetics of the classic 1911, but i'd rather shoot a glock or 92fs. so, i get it. i think.

The first time I shot a 1911 was years ago and I couldn't hit anything with it. I was into revolvers, but owned a BHP and a S&W Mod 39 (which I never should have sold). Stayed away from the 1911 for years. Then tried a friend's and decided it wasn't too bad. Once into the 45ACP pistols I decided I HAD to have a 1911. Now it is my first choice and I shoot them better than another pistol I own.
So take your time and don't let it intimidate you!

I have only fired one 1911 and nothing else has come close to it. Its my 1941 USGI colt just as it was issued to my dad as a Marine MP in WWII. (He never told me how he came home with it) I also have his M1. Who's jealous? Anyway to me I can't see how you can prefer a glock over a 1911. To me its all about the trigger and I just can't make myself like a striker gun. Are the new 1911's that bad? But then everybody is different what cranks your tractor might not even turn over some one else's. If Glocks do it for you what the hell are you doing with a 1911 anyway?

I get what you're saying. Everything isn't for everybody. Still, I firmly believe everyone needs a 1911 in their stable.

For my part, there's nothing that fits the hand and instinct points as well as old slab sides. Beyond that, the long history of use and the powerful round used has saved many a serviceman's and civilian's bacon when the SHTF.

I'm an N frame high power guy, but I delight in shooting my 1911.

My sincere condolences on your unfortunate condition. Perhaps invoking the spirit of St. John before your range sessions? A pilgrimage to the John M. Browning Firearms Museum? A contribution to the John M. Browning Endowment Fund?

My prayers are with you...
