how close was the bullet?

marv - was it a "whirr" or a "buzz"? Just curious - I've heard both and was wondering…(assuming you may have been in a position to hear the crack of course). The whirr was passing overhead and the buzz was tumbling after it (assumingly) hit something before me.

Working as a target manipulator underneath a berm I could easily ear the bullet make a very fast ripping sound as it ripped through a paper target. Took a few magazines before the chills stopped going down my spine.

Overseas I heard far too many whizzes and whistling with rounds having the right of way. It was always said that the whizzing is the bullet pushing aside the air within 5 meters of your ear. How much truth to that, I am unsure.

Ricochets can be heard a long distance off the larger caliber you go. I can recall hearing .50BMG rounds ricocheting 300 or so meters away off metal carcasses.

My dad has a favorite duck hunting story he likes to tell. He was about 18 and hunting ducks on some swamp land his family owned when he felt some brush move beside him...followed by an obvious BOOM noise. He hit the dirt/mud, and felt the "Woosh" of something just feet over his head, followed by yet another predictable BOOM. After waving his gun in the air and yelling several obscenities, he finally stopped the "hunters" from firing.

Were the "hunters" on his land? No - just outside of it. Did they know what they were shooting at? No. Well...hopefully not.
