How difficult is it to get a Cali handgun permit?

You shouldn't need an HSC (Handgun Safety Certificate) to rent guns at your local range. Or at least, my local range doesn't require it.

If you want to purchase a handgun, you'll need an HSC. It costs $25 at your local FFL and consists of 30 multiple choice and true/false questions. Most questions are just common sense. ("Who's responsibility is it to keep guns away from children?" Yours. "Can you still buy a handgun if you've been convicted of a felony?" No. etc.)

To pass, you have to answer 23 of the questions correctly (75%). Many people pass without even reading the HSC handbook. The HSC handbook should also be available free at your FFL if you're a Type A like me. :)

There are other requirements also if you want to purchase a handgun (having a California DL or ID, proving local residence, etc). Check with your local FFL, or other places in this forum.

When I got mine (recently) it was dead easy. You can buy the official pamphlet for $.50 at many gun stores around here, and that includes the 'self-test' sample questions. I studied for a few days off and on, then walked in to High Bridge Arms (SF), paid my $25 testing fee, and took the test. Both myself and my brother aced it with 100% each.

The test was 30 multiple choice questions (ABCD) and was mostly common sense, so anyone with half a brain shouldn't have any problem attaining the 75% passing grade required. Good luck.

I got two questions wrong:

-number years guns are taken for felony (life, thought it was 10 years)
-minimum age to buy handgun in CA (thought 18 but 21)

...it's easy.

This is a step ahead, but have you considered a CCW? It's listed as an exemption as far as all those safety certificate things.

If you passed the driver's written test, you can pass the HSC! It's easy...give the handbook a quick read & you're good to go ;)

CCW in California is exceedingly difficult. Most "ordinary" people can't qualify.

JH22, in San Jose, getting a CCW is virtually impossible, but that's not the case state wide. Obtaining a CCW is entirely dependant on the issuing county sheriff or Chief of Police. Many counties in CA have open CCW policies.

The HSC test is a piece of cake. When I took it, I didn't even look at the study book and still got a perfect 100 percent. If one has any common sense at all, one should pass the HSC on the first try, IMO.

If you are Active Duty military you're exempt from the HSC (I'm AD and this little bennie worries me. I know quite a few incompetent sailors)

Funny thing is: I think Non Kali residents can buy guns in Kali now. This is to accomodate all those illegal aliens who need a gun of course! They better snap em up before Guv'nur Conan takes the DLs away.

Yup. I've got one, so does Skunk (I think). And if I remember correctly, Bakersfield is fairly easy to get one as well....

I stand corrected. I didn't know it was easier in other parts of the state.

the rumor at one time was that if a substantial "campaign contribution" was made to the sherriffs re-election account, a CCW in santa clara county was easier to obtain.. now that our esteemed she-male sherriff Laurie is running for higher political office, maybe thats not true anymore.

maybe I should enroll at Chico so i can get one. . or at least can i use your address Tim ? maybe i should just get the heck out of this commie s-hole

Thanks

Tim

Ah yes, and the infamous 'Sheriff's Advisory Counsel'; basically a bunch of good old boys that were contributors to the sheriff's fund- they made 'advisories' to the sheriff based upon contributions to their various funds... long gone and good riddance.

Back on topic; if you can't pass the HSC test, you really shouldn't be messing with guns... oh yeah, and give me your car keys also, 'cause you shouldn't be driving either!
:D

Super easy, just watch for oddly worded questions; the person that put the test together had an odd way method of sentence construction.

"the person that put the test together had an odd way method of sentence construction"

you're not suggesting that a fine state employee has less of a grasp of English than your'e average public high school freshman ? :)

there are a few goofy worded questions... and it does say place x and everybody always circles the answer letter

I can't believe the restrictions you guys live under.
Need a hammer-go buy a hammer. Need a gun-go buy a gun.
It should be that easy.

Tell me about it. Ugh! A few years back there was a DIFFERENT buyer's permit (forget what it was called). Then the next year I had to take a different test for a different piece of paper (HSC). And I don't buy a gun-a-month but just after I buy each gun I feel oppressed by that policy too. Grrr.

This test is so easy it's a joke. When I had to take it, I asked "Shouldn't I study first?" The gunshop owner laughed "Don't worry, even little old ladies pass it. You only need to get 75% to pass." My buddy interjected "I got one question wrong last time I took it and I felt like an idoit; that's how easy it is." He then kept yakking about my new Swedish Mauser and asking me questions about it while I tried to concentrate on taking the test  . I still got 100%. I think the test is just a formality to appease individuals who fear the fact that all you need to buy a handgun is the ability to pass a background check and some money. Let me put it this way: the people who fail the test are lucky breathing is automatic.

In Santa Clara County (San Jose), we had a convicted felon on the old Sheriffs Advisory Council. He was a wealthy local citizen convicted for beating another man with a blackjack. He suspected that the other man was boinking his wife. Boinking is of course a medical term!
He donated heavily to the re- election fund and was given a CCW. He is a multi millionaire. One of the reasons they no longer give CCWs for political contributions.
Our present Sheriff is unlikely to allow CCW.

Getting a CCW in Bakersfield can vary in difficulty depending on who you have to go through, if you live in County then it's easier to get one while going through the Sherrif's dept. but if you live in the city it is a bit more difficult going through the Police dept.

You'll need an "excuse" or valid reason, what will be considered valid will depend on what you do and where you live. Needless to say I know lots of people in Bakesfield that have CCW permits.

Call up 2nd Amendment(if you live in Bakersfield you should know the shop) who do a LOT of CCW permit classes and re-certifications. They can get you started off pretty easy.
