I am interested in what I call "Combination Guns". Examples: Savage 24, 42, etc.

I know that there are many different types, 2 barrel, 3, 4 barrel, and any others.

This is my question: What do I need to actually search for? Where and how can I find out more about them?

When I am searching online sites, I usually search for combination guns, but I was hoping that someone here could point me in the right direction as far as for search words, websites, books, etc.

I would really like to get an over/under 22LR/12,16,or 20 gauge. The most common one that I find is 22LR/410, but at this time, I am looking for one with a bigger shotgun.

I do see Savage 24s online in 22/20gauge quite often. I've hunted with one, and I liked it, I just wanted to know what else was out there.

For deer hunting, I'd like something like a 308/12 gauge. I found one company that makes them currently, but they have the shotgun barrel over the rifle, I think the company is CZ(?).

Thank you,

If you know the company that makes them, go to their website.

If you have a periodic local gun show, attend and shop around. I've never been to one that didn't have a half dozen of some combination of caliber and bore for sale. They've been made for years.

I wouldn't mind having a 20 ga. with a .357 on top of it.

Combination guns are not all that popular and haven't been outside prepper/small game hunting. A few models you might be interested are Rossi Trifecta which has three single shot barrels. Usually a shotgun, centerfire, and rimfire.

Another firearm you might look at, if you can find it and afford it, the Chiappa X-Caliber. This weapon is based off an older survival rifle platform called the M6 Scout with a .22LR/.22 Horney over a .410 barrel. The added benefit of the X-caliber are drop in barrel inserts that allow it to shoot most pistol cartridges.

I guess you'll just need to haunt gun shows and sites like GunsAmerica and GunBroker. I'm not sure that anyone is making that sort of thing now, so your most likely source would be the secondary market.

Most U. S. made, reasonably priced combination guns I've seen have been two barrel .22lr/.410 combinations.

Combination guns in a rifle chambering more suitable for large game have been popular in Europe. I've seen two or, more commonly, three barrel types at high-end gun dealers. They tend to be very pricey affairs. If you're interested you might check out some of the advertisers in magazines like The Double Gun Journal or Shooting Sportsman.

Merkel apparently still makes some O/U models. Blaser still lists O/U and drilling (three barrel) models. Krieghoff also shows O/U and drilling combination guns. These guns will have very fancy price tags.

So?
There are good sound technical reasons for the shot barrel to be over the rifle barrel in a centerfire combination gun. It puts the higher pressure round closer in line to the hinge pin and locking lugs, minimizing the bending stress on the receiver.

A CZ or Valmet combination gun would be your least expensive way out, the German guns Frank mentioned are very expensive.

Do a search using the key word "Drilling(s)" this will bring up a good many multi barrel guns.

What's your budget?

If you are in the beer category, just search for Savages.

If you are in the champagne category, search for Drillings. You can spend between $1500 and infinity. Look for older ones, many hundreds (thousands actually, likely) came home after WW-II from Germany as war trophies. I just picked up a Sauer 16 guage (two barrels) over 9.3x74 Drilling and it's a beauty. Looking at another in 16 guage over 7x57R, equally nice. Prices aren't shocking, in the $3K range.

check out chiappa. I have their .410/.22 double badger. I know they have another one that comes with a 12 or 20 gauge but I am not sure you can get more than a .22 magnum on top.

That is an interesting Drilling, Speedo66, but there are a lot of "issues" with it.

The gun says 6.5x58, the dies say .25-.303.
I visualize a session with a chamber reamer to get from the gentle old 6.5x58 Forester to something you could make cases for.

The scope is mounted to a rail that is attached to the gun's claw mounts. I get the idea that the claw mount was altered so the rail could be more easily attached.

You can get in over your head pretty easily with these obscure guns.

^^

Agreed that the claw mount setup has been fooled with here. I would want to look this one over in person.

There are loads if these for sale though. I looked at three this week passing thru various gun stores and I wasn't even trying hard to find them.

I found a really good condition Savage 24 in .222/20 gauge in a pawn shop several months ago. It needs a new rear sight and I haven't shot it yet. Its a $400 gun.

Plenty of combi guns here. Buy your self a bit of quality and enjoy. I've shot Deer from roe deer to moose with mine.

I have a Savage 22/20ga that I bought when I was 14 back in the 70's. The 22 extractor never worked worth beans, and I was warned of that. But I wanted one soooo bad I did not care at the time.

Since then I have come across the Savage in 30/30- 12ga, 357/12ga, 223/12ga, and 222/12ga. Too bad I didn't have the funds to pick any of those up.
