How do you keep the receiver pins from falling out of a Remington 870?

I have a Remington 870 and one of the two receiver pins (the smaller one) is not in the gun securely. If I turn the gun sideways and pump it a few times and wiggle the trigger guard, the small pin drops out. I just cleaned the gun very thoroughly so, I hope that doesn't have anything to do with it. I don't remember what it was like before I cleaned it but, I don't think I had this problem.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Joe - I have an 870 and assume your pins both have a small ''dimple''. I can only think that the smaller one is a tad under tolerance and maybe (subject to other suggestions) a small extra ''set'' in both ends might help - only upsetting to the smallest degree.

My small pin has the smaller dimple - but of course it would be easy to marr the finish unless very careful. I am right now thinking small punch (not sharp point) - nylon block under receiver and ''do'' pin from both sides. Even 1/10 of a thou would possibly be enough to secure, without making future removal too hard.

Let's see what input you get from 870 afficionados!

You may have lost a retaining spring when ypou took it apart. They snap into the detents on your pins (when you insert pins in receiver) and hold them in place.

You probably lost the front trigger plate detent spring. It's a spring steel wire C clip with a leg on top that snaps into notch around the trigger plate detent pin when it is pushed into place. It fits into a notch on the carrier dog pivot tube and they come out pretty easily when the gun is fieldstripped if you aren't careful (unless you WANT them to come out, then they are difficult to remove). See the exploded drawing at http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/rem870.htm , the pivot tube is part number 11 there and the detent spring is part number 70.

Remington's 2005 parts list has two of them listed, I confess I don't know the difference between them. I suspect one might be for the Marine Magnum but that's just a guess.

Part #
17539 Trigger plate pin detent spring, front $3.00
97569 Trigger plate pin detent spring, front $3.00 (the MM part?)

Give Remington's parts dept. a call at 1-800-243-9700... or see Brownells catalog at http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/st...+PLATE+PIN+DETENT+SPRING,+FRONT&s=27229#27229 .

Thanks for all the information.

Lee Lapin, you were right. It was the c-clip that was missing. Remington is going to send me one for free.

FYI, according to Remington, 17539 is the one for 12 gauge guns, 97569 is the one for 20 gauge guns.
