How do you shoot the J frame effectively?

Practice, practice, practice. A bunch of dry fire and live fire. Bullet casting and handloading helps significantly. J frame snubs can be very accurate. They have long had the reputation of being inaccurate and under powered. They are neither.

Getting stocks that fit your hand will be an improvement. Working on trigger technique is another improvement. A steel frame and standard pressure loads will also help a lot.

I have smaller hands and this setup fits me just fine. I shoot pretty well with it at 25 yards and under.

For the life of me I have been unable to figure out how to effectively shoot a J frame. I have tried for years and had no success. I would really like to get another 642, but I cannot hit anything past belly gun ranges, and I know that they can be fired effectively at distance. I shoot K frames, L frames, autos, etc. and have no problems. I have been unable to pick up the skill set to shoot these smaller revolvers. What grip, etc. do you utilize to make the J frame perform for you?
  1. I'm not sure what you use yours for, but mine is pocket carried for close range self-defense. "Belly gun range" is all I expect from it, albeit I can keep all five in the scoring rings on an NRA 50' target at 50', one handed.
  2. I don't fight the grip size, I use it, curling my little finger under the grip.

Just an update. I have been dry firing quite a bit and took it out to the range yesterday. Still shooting high, but the groups have gotten noticeably smaller. This is one of my projects that I will keep working on. My intention is to be able to hit a paper plate at 25 yards regularly.
