How expensive did things get in the January 2013 Panic?

I am amazed that people will do nothing when things are good then when they go bad they run around like chickens with their head cut off.

Ridiculous.

Purely anecdotally:

My local Gun Shows (DFW TX) went from ARs available (both brand new at tables, and from private sellers walking around the show) for $600-650, to the point where any AR was "worth" $1000-1200. Or more.

Stayed that way for a while. It has moved back down to almost where we started; although a $600-650 AR is not on every table these days, they can be found.

I have been slowly stocking up on ammo. Wish I could spend more but there are other priorities, However, I have most of my bases covered.:)

Three days after SH, I saw 55gr 5.56 for $1 a round in a CT store. 62 gr was going for even more. I never went back into that shop ever again.

I had a LGS who had just gotten several cases of Pmags in the week before the stupidity. He was charging $99 each for a while. I understand, a guy with a small shop has to get while the gettin's good, but that was over the mark.

While I like the guy, I have not been back to his store since, just like CTD.

As for stocking up, I was sitting pretty good on .22 and am still OK. I had signed up for a multi-day training class and needed ~1k rounds of .40. I ended up working hard for that (ended up trading with a guy who needed some I had)

the question is "how much is enough" when you can burn through 1k+ in a weekend?

For once I beat the rush. I had loaded up on ammo back when it was really cheap, still have it. SH happened December? I had just pent a lot of money on the Black. Friday sales from P SA and also the ammo vendors. Two weeks later I felt pretty smart ;)

Why don't people stock up on 9mm, .223, 7.62x39, .45ACP, etc. NOW while you can get it?
I think a fair amount of people are.

I also believe a lot of people are keeping more ammo on hand which is why ammo price and availability has been slow to return to "normal".

Me too, but it was dumb luck, I was planning for retirement and filled up my available storage space with ammo and components -- turned out to be my best "investment" ever :)

I'm enjoying shooting mine now that I've retired, but I didn't have enough .22lr as I never expected anything this bad, but as long as .22lr costs as much as I can reload 9mm for, I'll shoot a lot more 9mm instead. Mostly holding the last 15K of .22lr for my wife to shoot when she comes along, had enough to not really slow down until about a year ago.

I am still amazed that people still complain about CTD charging exorbitant amounts of money for ammo mags, etc., like CTD invented greed?

I have seen PLENTY of other websites, local gun shops, and individuals do the exact same thing. Face it, greed is widespread, just not contained at CTD.

People then say "I'll never go to CTD (or some other place ever again) as they were charging too much for ammo". This usually comes from the same person that tried to get $1500 for a CMMG AR they bought for $650 during the panic buy. Hypocrites.

Why do people take it so personally? If I think person or business or website charges too much for something, I will take my money elsewhere. I do not take it personally.

A retailer charging $100 for a USGI mag or $3,000 for a 6920 is a little much.

BUT that's not even the main beef most people have with that particular retailer. It is also, if not solely, because they pulled ALL firearms sales after the event in 2012. Guns are baaaad don't you know? When they got a whole hell of a lot of backlash they changed their minds. Too late.

Things were crazy that's for sure. I have a friend who is a LGS owner that sold 830,000 rounds of Federal Lake City m193 in roughly 25 days ( January 2013 ) Price was almost $1 per round.

The CDNN one isn't fair, as the price was for a single pair of Para USA stripped lowers with serial numbers 1&2 Certainly not worth the price to me, but to a collector having serial numbers 1&2 of something is pretty unique. Often consecutive serial numbers are offered a price premium over two with non-consecutive numbers.

I don't buy into the "greedy" thing. Markets are what they are and periods of irrationality abound, there are asking prices and selling prices, its the selling prices that "make" the market.

As long a people will pay $0.10 per round of bulk pack .22lr prices aren't coming down anytime soon, I just will stay out of the market in the meantime.

Excellent point.

That CDNN ad image is pretty much irrelevant to this topic.

Some were trying to sell stripped AR lowers on calguns for $350.00 each. When I asked if they were being serious, they got offended.

Someone here locally was trying to sell CCI Mini-Mags for $.50/round at the height of the scare.

I just watched and laughed at the goons paying $70+ for 30 round Pmags for AR's. I always wondered .... who were the dumb <deleted> paying these prices?????
Anyone here want to fess up? I doubt it... The mania was astounding anything firearm related.

I didn't sell anything because then I wouldn't have it. As far as ammo goes I stocked up in the early 90's and reloaded all the range brass I could pick up. I have enough ammo that I'm no longer picking up range brass except my own.

I had a case of Yugo 7.62x39 listed on GB. A non rated buyer won the auction for $1325.00 + shipping. He paid promptly and by the time I left feedback he had over 20+ ratings. Ammo, rifles, shotguns you name it he was buying.Spent a small fortune in a short mount of time.

The backstory behind the Para-Ord stripped lowers is that they graced their website and magazine for several months for a few hundred bucks with no takers.

Then when the panic was in full swing they raised it to that. So actually it does represent what was going on to some degree. They didn't raise the price merely because they were slightly collectible and it was December. The price was raised because they're were somewhat collectible, they were a key component for a semi-auto EBR build and the panic was in full swing.

This is the reason for the higher prices on ammo.

I remember seeing 223./5.56 sell for a dollar a round and I think I remember seeing ho-hum black rifles sell for well over $1,000.

Anyone remember how high stuff actually sold for?

I actually started a thread on here and tracked auction values of various guns and types of ammo during the panic for several months, before I got bored and stopped.

Sure you could find it if you searched.

I remember Cheaper than Dirt at $76.00 for 50 round boxes of Winchester white box 9mm 115 grain.

On a local gun forum in MI, I saw Carbon 15's for $2000! UUGH!!

One local store was selling Glock 17/19/22/23 gen 4's with one mag for $750 and offering spare mags for $75. :uhoh:

Moral of the story, if website/retailer/individual is wanting too much $$$$$ for an item, DON'T BUY IT.

I was at a gun show after SH and some vendor was trying to sell 20 round boxes of 7.62x39 TulAmmo for $17.50 per box. Absurd. I gather he sold pretty much zero boxes.

6 or 7 years ago I bought a used Kel-Tec Sub-2000 for maybe $250, including an extra 30 round mag (stock mag was 18 round).

MSRP is around $400. (not counting the extra mag)

I sold it last year (or maybe 2 years ago) for $600.

The guy I sold it to seemed pleased with the purchase. And, while I did like the gun, I was pleased with the sale, as I needed the money. (It put new tires on my car and new glasses on my face.)

Viva la Liberty!

$500 S&W revolvers were going for $350-$400 (people were dumping them to buy the soon to be banned AR-15, and Glock semiautomatic handguns).
