How Many Double Up Ear Protection?

Always when shooting rifles, always when shooting pistols when there are other people shooting too (a guy next to you with a short barreled .40 or .357 can be painful!). Sometimes when it's just me and I'm only shooting .380, 38 spcl or 9mm in a longer barreled gun, I'll not double up.

When I'm at an IDPA match I'll use plugs and some electronic muffs turned up so I can hear stuff better and let the electronics take out the boom.

After shooting a .44MAG with only ear plugs I've learned a lesson. Almost every time i go to the range I double up. I thought i was the only one, I guess i'm not special.

I always double up. Never know when the shooter next to you will be using a 44 Mag or a 454 Causall....

With a .22, one layer only (with rifles)
Anything else, double up. I really need to budget some more for better protection that fits better. I also wear protection when working with anything loud, tools, tractors, etc. My hearing is too valuable.

I also need to see about doubling up in the airplane, but I wonder about being able to hear the radio without turning it way up (and thus defeating the purpose of doubling up)

I have, I bought some "gun muffler" branded muffs, I was able to pull out the material inside them, turns out I had some of the same material in one of our craft boxes, so I used the existing material as a template and made extras to go inside, now the material inside the muffs is 2x, they work quite well. Otherwise I use the foam type plugs we get for free at work.

I'm deaf, I have a 53 db hearing loss, which means I cannot hear any thing under 50db. BUT I do still wear ear plugs.. when I do, I hear absolutely nothing. Gotta protect what I have left. By the way I'm 21.

What are some good options for not a lot of money? I stand corrected on my previous opinion... :uhoh:

I loves me some foamies, but what are some good muffs? Ones that will stay on, work well, and not ruin my cheek weld?

Are foamies even really that effective? :(

If I double up while shoot a 9mm and a .22 pistols (Outdoors) will I still suffer hearing loss?

Indoor range, double up all the time.
Out door, double up unless i am the only one shooting and its not a loud gun.
My muffs and plugs are rated around 30-33 always

I already have hearing loss in my left ear and constant loud ringing, from ear infections. I dont wish to gain any more hearing loss, at the age of 21. Also i try to use plugs at any loud clubs or bars with music.

A quick and dirty over view, as i know it
to be honest almost any sound over a long enough time line leads to hearing loss. Theres a chart you can find online, that shows this. For this chart i typed here more or less the numbers are made up

1,000db over a time of 1 sec will give you hearing loss
500db over a time of 1 hour will give you hearing loss
200db over a time of 24 hours will give you hearing loss
100db over a time of 64 hours will give you hearing loss
54db over a time of 3000 hours will give you hearing loss

when shooting you want to make it as quiet as you can, but also the lengthof time you shoot matters too. With plugs rated 30db your making things 30db quieter. If firing a loud gun that puts out 30db more noise then you want to add muffs. So you should be fine with good plugs and muffs, with most handguns

I double up when I'm indoors but usually only use foam plugs outdoors unless there's a big gun directly next to me (or I'm firing one).

I use the foamies and muffs. As a matter of fact, the biggest reason for buying electronic muffs is so you can hear range commads through the foam ear plugs.

these numbers are way, way off.

1000db for 1 second would turn you into a heap of goo. That's many orders of magnitude louder than any sound on earth.

The other figures are equally bogus.

I always try to. If I'm lazy, just the disposables and muffs, if I'm planning on the range being busy I put in the custom plugs (I can feel the seal, but they take more effort to put in and take out) and muffs.

It really depends on what I am shooting, if it's centerfire I usually do, if I am shooting rimfire I only use muffs.

I dont normaly double up. But I do make sure my 10 year old son uses Macks Shooter's putty AND muffs. I keep him out of indoor range if there is a .50
or .500s...
