How Many Guns Are Enough ?

My personal limit is 2,000 guns. I figure that's how much wall space is available in my house.

I think I could stop after I got:
-1 example of each gun used from each country for every conflict the US has been involved in after 1900 or so.
-1 AR in every caliber an AR can be chambered in. I will settle for uppers if they use a standard .223 lower with no mag adapters.
-1 gun that shoots each caliber of brass that I have picked up at ranges over the years, so I have an excuse to reload it all.
-A good .308 from every company that makes a good .308.
-3 good 1911s from every company that makes good 1911s (1 FS, 1 Commander, 1 Officers)
-1 Good example of every interesting pistol design made after 1900 or so.
-1 Good example of every interesting rifle design made after 1850 or so.
-A lever action in every caliber I can find a lever action for.
-A good revolver in every caliber they make revolvers in. Except .357's...I need one of each style from everybody.
-2 .50BMGs - 1 Semi, 1 Bolt

If I ever get all those, I will probably stop. Unless I forgot to add something.

When I was younger and poorer, every gun had to have a need or rationale. Now that I'm old and better off, what else have I got to spend money on? Don't have the reflexes for faster horses or younger women, and my liver has already had enough whiskey. :)

Since when does the word "enough" have to do with a firearms collection?
I collect historical Mil-surps, guns I like to shoot at the range, guns for concealed carry, home defense, guns that I think are unique or just plain cool. Never thought of limiting my collection. Life is too short to limit oneself.

Enough means little to me.:D I have disposable income to spare and want something I just get it. For a while I was into the gun of the month club. Now I buy whatever attracts my curiosity. Firearms ---ammo---reloading All fun for me. I have enough already that when a bunch of friends get together to shoot with me they each get to pick a few to shoot and a ammo can full without arguing over who gets to shoot what. Some may say I have more than enough that is their choice.:neener:

As many as you actually have a use for. Collecting is still a use if you have a goal in mind. But you need to have the other things that go along with a nice gun collection. Lie cash for your kids education, and taking care of your home and wife. If you are neglecting the other more important things in life, then you have too many.
Otherwise enjoy your money on what makes you happy

Certainly an individual choice. I think I've about reached my limit, at least for long guns, due to lack of storage space and, more importantly, losing the ability to "know" each gun in my collection. Each gun sights a bit differently, functions better with different ammo, etc. I sometimes am not able to remember the more subtle attributes of my various guns, even though I try to keep notes. I even attach cards to those of my guns with more unusual sighting/shooting characteristics. I'm an older guy but not retired yet. So I plan to start reducing the collection soon. But it's going to hurt!

I have "enough". My definition of "enough" is : If I could not purchase one more gun for the rest of my life, I would be satisfied with what I have. There are a couple more I would like, but I am not chomping at the bit to get them. I am sure that antis would look at my gun closet and declare it "massive weapons cache". I gun enthusiast would think it rather sparse, and chide me for not having enough magazines/ammo to go with what I have.

Not really sure how many are enough but I can tell you
that 68 isn't enough or I wouldn't be looking for more. :D

For about 20 years, I flew, built, designed, and crashed model airplanes. Had about eight "essential" guns in those days. Then the kids grew up and moved out, the wife wanted Harleys for each of us, and I decided to sell my models and considerable collection of related equipment. About then a new range opened up and started holding competitions. I had time, money, and desire to enjoy shooting again. Now I have more than eight "essential" Glocks, and about 40 firearms that will get handed down to my three sons and two grandsons as time goes by. I moved recently to a rural mountain subdivision (5 acres is the smallest lot) and found I needed an air rifle and a few more accurate rimfires.

ENOUGH is when I have to debate whether or not to spend the money to buy a gun I want. If I enjoy owning the gun more than holding the stack of money, I made a good choice. I don't buy more than I can afford, and I don't finance gun purchases. I've slowed down on my buying, but I'm off in an hour or so to buy the wife a Shield - she just got her CCW permit and has discovered her M&P 9c is better suited to the range.

Quality guns are a great recreational investment - especially compared to model airplanes. I've never gone shooting and come home with two trashed guns! Most of my guns would sell today for more than I paid for them, and have given me a great deal of enjoyment while I've owned them. Some get shot more often than others, but I enjoy them all. The ones I didn't enjoy moved on and give someone else enjoyment.

I've had as few as zero and as many as sixty. I recently pared it down to twenty-one, which is a much more manageable number.

I am sure I am not the first to post this:

Just one more......

However, in all honestly, there isn't anything in particular I am looking for, just whatever I can get into "right
" and flip quick.

For me it is simple, JUST ONE MORE..:rolleyes:

^^^^^^Guess I should have read all the way to the end eh. Yea what he said^^^^^^^

As someone noted, the thrill of acquisition has waned and I'm realizing I finally have enough and, maybe, too many. Actually, I'm feeling that way about material things generally.

I have enough as far as needs. A .22lr handgun and rifle, a 12 gauge Wingmaster, Savage 99 in .300 Savage, .38spl carry for my wife and a . 40S&W for me. Plus some mil-surps. I never plan to hunt anything larger than deer, unless I get lucky and draw an elk tag, but I would still trust the Savage. So if you define enough by need I am set for life. Enough by desire? Well my needs are met like I said, from here on it is all for fun. I will let you know when I have enough fun.

For me buying or otherwise acquiring something just to own it has no attraction whatsoever. Though I find guns endlessly fascinating in lots of their endless varieties if I don't have some type of use for it, actual or perceived, then I'm really not interested in owning it. I've too few resources to be tying up a significant amount in something I just have no need for.

My tastes are rather pedestrian and utilitarian:

-Glock 9mm pistols for defensive use
-Ruger DA wheel guns in .357, .45 Colt or .454 for CCW, general use and hunting
-Ruger 10/22's as my .22 of choice (though a Ruger American recently snuck in)
-AR in 5.56 for defense, CMP, varminting etc
-.357 rifle now that they're legal for deer hunting in Ohio
-A couple 12 gauge shotguns, a short barrel semi-auto for slugs & buck and a O/U for everything else.

I've a decent size safe bought to hold what I own with a bit of room for growth, and as long as I control my penchant for acquiring 10/22's I should be fine.

I have no kids as heirs. Only a best friend, one brother and one nephew who are shooters to leave anything to, so I'm not acquiring to outfit descendants for posterity, only for my use, curiosity and enjoyment. And as a 200 yard range is the longest I have access to, anything too exotic makes no sense.

So how many are enough? Maybe a few more yet, but as I realistically mostly have anything I might need now I'm kinda into wants territory. In that vein, a .45-70 is a rifle I'd love to own. :)

I don't know, my first firearm a Remington Slide action 22 RF rifle was given to me in 1949. The last one I purchased Dec 2013 was a CZ 527 Varmint 17 Hornet. I m 78 years old and over the years there has ben some different new cartridges developed that I wonted to try. So I have ended up shooting 17, 20, 22 , 24, 25, 26, 27 , 30, 33, and 41 caliber rifles . All have ben fun to reload ammo for and shoot. I have shot small game, varmints , unwonted critters, pronghorn, mule and white tail deer and elk. I m slowing down so I expect that the 17 Hornet will be my last firearm purchase. Have any of you read about the new 17 WSM rimfire round that shoots a 20 grain bullet at 3,000 ft/sec ? Should Ruger or CZ chamber a accurate rifle for it I bet it would be fun shooting prairie dogs with it.
