How many magazines ?

i am slacking on the ak mags i have 2 30rd and 4 40rd, but for my ar i have 56 30rd mags, and approx 25 of those are new in the wrapper.

20 AR mags, 10 AK mags, 10 Mosin stripper clips. Basically more than enough for life considering how often (or little) I get to go shoot.

Most of my rifles, with the two obvious and notable exceptions, are charger-fed into fixed magazines, so I come to the table with those sensibilities. I see no need to have thirty magazines around. I mean, a magazine exists in order to allow rapid reloading of the firearm, not to store ammunition. Even for my AR, I have more stripper clips loaded with ammo than I have magazines, and I have far more ammo than I can put on those stripper clips at any one time.

I do have extra magazines for most of those of my guns which take magazines, but in each case they can be counted on the fingers of both hands.

Nothing wrong with having a lot of magazines, but to me it's a waste of time and money to have more than you and yours would carry into the field.

4- 30 round and 6- 20 round for the AR. ALL of the spare ammo is put in stripper clips.

The 6 hunting rifles have 3 each, one standard capacity and 2 that provide a flat/near flat stock bottom, usually 3-5 rnds. each.

The 4 pistols all have 10.

(10) 30's (10) 20's @2) 5's and I didn't buy them all at once. I'd like to have more but I think I'd also like another rifle.

I've got a dozen mags for the AKs - figure I'm covered there - and ten USGI mags for the AR, which are much flimsier than I expected. If prices ever come down, I'll be replacing them with PMAGs and retaining the USGI mags as backups.

When I was an Infantryman in the US Army our Combat Load was 7 mags fully loaded. 1 In the M16, 3 in in one of two Mag pouches.

For good measure I have 10:)

As for a handgun 4 per is Ideal for me!

over 20? Thats retarded.

If you can't get the job done without 20+ mags you are doing something wrong.

Again, for the hard of hearing, 20+ magazines are because magazines wear out. They are legal now, and they won't necessarily be legal in the future, so some of us (not me, actually, but still) buy all of the magazines that we think we will need in our lifetime/the gun's lifespan, in case we can't get more later.

I don't think anyone is advocating carrying 20+ magazines.

3 posts and you're offending a good portion of the shooters here.

Way to kick things off :)

And it has nothing to do with 'getting things done'.

As mentioned, there are many reasons to have lots of magazines.

I figure about 20 mags per rifle. This allows some mags to use as trading fodder. If the S ever really does HTF things like magazines to barter are priceless. A less extreme scenario would be the last AWB. My assortment of mags triples in value very quickly, allowing me to trade a few for some other goodies.

when you can tell me the exact numbers they will attack in, then you will be qualified to say how many magazines is or isnt retarded. if you assume 20 is too many, and it turns out you needed 21....then, and only then, are you doing something wrong.

If you're in a situation that CARRYING more than a dozen on person is required, you needed a squad.

OWNING more than a dozen is just plain smart.

Well, "retarded" was a little strong of you.

But come on, guys. For the money spent on fifty magazines, you could have bought another gun.

Magazines are for carrying, not for ammunition storage.

If the spring breaks, make or buy a new spring. If the lips wear out, solder them; they need not be very strong. If the entire magazine gets demolished, I want to party with YOU, cowboy.

Some people on here must have an endless amount of storage space. Some guns I have one or two for. My "goto" guns I usually have 5-10. I am not going to have crates of magazines stored up in my townhouse.

I was a gunowner through the "94 AWB.

Nothing like paying $125 for ONE Glock 19 15-round magazine.

I have a lot of life ahead of me. And I'd like to pass on a few rifles to my kids. So, I get whatever magazines I can.

I fail to see how that is "retarded."

Let's see...

On the one hand, I have enough magazines to last my life, and pass on to my kids.

On the other hand, I have a pile of $11.95 magazines that I could sell off peicemeal for a tremendous profit.

The first thing I learned as a stockbroker was "Buy low, Sell high."

If there isn't an AWB, I have my needs covered.

If there is, I have my needs covered.

If I find that I have more than I need, I make a significant profit on the excess.

What does "retarded" mean in you guys' world?

Right now, my numbers are:

AR-15 30 round: 20
AR-15 20 round: 1 (need a few more here)
LR-308 20 round: 5 (have more on backorder)
LR-308 4 round: 1
Glock 19 15 round: 10
Glock 19 10 round: 2 (came with the handgun)
1911A1 8 round: 10
Ruger 10/22 10 round: 2
Ruger 10/22 high capacity: none (don't really need, but may get one or two)

Mr. Duke of Doubt, in the service we would store rnds in 20 rd mags for the m-14, but only load 15 rds to save wear and tear on the spring. never encountered one problem with a really old m-14 mag my 20 yrs in the navy and the 5 diff ships i was stationed on. Of course once a yr, we would do maintence on the mags, empty them, strip them down, clean and lube, re-assemble and reload, 15 rds each. back into storage another yr.

i got a cetme with 12 mags, doing the same thing, 15 rds per mag.
possible get more mags in the near future before more restricting legislation is passed :cuss:
