How many magazines ?

I have to have more than a few - all my mags are imported, and cutting off that supply is VERY easy.

I also picked up replacement springs for everything....

For the reasons Jwarren laid out, I've got some that are NIW. And they will stay that way until, God willing, the day comes I pass them on to my sons or daughters with that new rifle.

'Course, I'm one of the guys that bought a lot of SKS' for 1/4 of what they're going for now. I've kept most of them but every once in a while someone comes along that in my mind(my guns, my call) deserves it, and they get it for what I paid for it or as a gift.

Magazines are the same way. I'm not getting caught with the ol' shorts down if another ban gets passed.

A few extra springs makes sense, I guess. Cheap to acquire, easy to store. But since I've never had a magazine spring wear out, I can't justify it myself.

i looked this thread over and thought hmm i'm not sure so i started digging

8/20rd mags

I have 5) 30s and 1) 100 for my Thompson, 4) 8s for my 1911, 3) 30s and 1) 15 for my M1 Carbine, 6) 19s for my XDM 9mm, 10 stripper clips for my C96, and a few dozen clips for my M1 Garand. I would like to have more, but I'm buying an M1A soon (if I can find one) and will stock up on mags for it. The rest of my guns are revolvers. I think a person should have as many mags as he feels he can afford. You can always trade if you have to, but may not be able to buy more in the uncertain future. Also, having enough mags and ammo costs money too. "A man's got to know his limitations"

10 for the Hi-point carbine
8 30-rounders and 2 5-rounders for the AK
8 for the P3AT
3 for the MKII
3 for the Phoenix HP-22

Haven't bought any extras for the PF-9 yet.

I think I have 24 guns with detachable magazines. I don't really know how many I have for each specific gun, but I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 magazines in total. I know I have 100+ for the FAL because when I bought it some outfit was selling mags at $2 each if you bought 100 so I bought a hundred.

Conversely, I only have one for P08 Luger because I don't shoot it that often and really haven't needed spare one, yet.

I guess I have an average of around 20 or so per gun with a couple being just 1 or 2 and others being a little crazy.

I always see everyone talking about needing to buy more magazines, but never really any specific numbers, so I'm just wondering how many do people actually have, and perhaps why that number ?

Every weapon I own is different. For my hunting rifles I have one or two for my shooting rifles more than that. This is because I shoot them more and they sometimes go bad. When they go bad I simply throw away or give them away with the caveat that they don't work right and not to depend upon it.
I don't really have any hi-cap rifles etc

Part of the problem you are having with understanding your own question is that with magazine fed weapons there is no such thing as a hi-cap. If you look it up in the dictionary the word does not exist. People try to make it mean different things but this is posturing for political reasons. A "factory" magazine for one of my rifles comes in 1,3,19,20 and 30 round capacities. After market the magazines are available in up to 50 rounds. I don't have any use for a 50 round magazine but someone else may. This is no different than cars coming in different size fuel tanks. Is the truck with the 25 gallon gas tank high capacity? When the car with the 12 gallon tank can go twice as far on single tank?

For example I've read things on various sites about, having up to 30 mags per type of rifle, and that seems like it would be a lot to me ?

It might to you if you don't do much with firearms. hunting laws vary and may provide you use a certain size of magazine, shooting competitions also. Some people like to fill magazines and shoot a lot without having to waste a lot of time reloading.

I understand that especially right now, there is a lot of concern about future availability, and the need down the road in case some break etc.

Of course.

But then I think about for example, soldiers on Iraq, surely they don't carry around 30 mags with them, or do they ?

I carried seven rifle magazines and three pistol magazines while on patrol. I kept a even more loaded on hand back at the sleeping place in case they were needed. When walking around a base camp (rarely) I carried one for the pistol and left the rifle under guard somewhere. I guess I had about 25 magazines but carried less than half on a daily basis.

All the firearms I own that take magazines are .22s, so I'm limited to 10-rounders for the most part.

And with those I like to have 5. 5 10-rounders makes for loading a 50-round box even. :D

I normally keep at least a dozen per pistol and two dozen per rifle; sometimes more. The only exception so far is my AR10s; I only have six per rifle.

If you can't get the job done without 20+ mags you are doing something wrong.
They're not for using all at once - they're backstock for when the ones that I'm using finally crack a feed lip or break a baseplate.

For the money spent on fifty magazines, you could have bought another gun.

Magazines are for carrying, not for ammunition storage

Well I buy G3 magazines in bulk at a whopping 3 bucks each. FAL magazines are a crazy 8 bucks each.

150 bucks gets me 50 for a G3, what kind of gun can I get?

And of course as JWarren says, bans change things.
Not sure why you guys get stuck on how many you can actually carry, that has nothing to do with how many you own.
Stock up for the neighbors sake :)

I sold Mini14 30 round mags for 5, 6 times what I paid for them during the Clinton years.

Wish my 401k could do that :)

I looked at how many a russian soldier carries (For the AK). I believe that number is 5 or 6. (5 mag pouch and 1 in the gun?) Then get a few spares.

That's my theory. If I had an AR, I would look at the US army and get at least that many.

Other non military stuff typically depends on how many I shoot at the range. My 10/22 I have a few for because it being a .22, when shot, I shoot a lot.
Then consider if you own something uncommon. If I buy something that is fed by detachable magazine, I but at least 1 extra and try to get more ASAP. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than having a detachable magazine rifle / pistol with only 1 magazine.

I've got about 10 for my AR, now that I sit and think about it. And that doesn't strike me as anywhere NEAR enough. Probably 15~20 per EBR sounds about right for me.

Of course, this is not counting the .22 conversion mags I have on the way, and I need more of those (for more cheap shooting fun!).

Pistol mags--well, I don't have a "hi-cap" pistol yet, so it's not an issue.

I live in NJ and i just bought my first AR 15. It came with one 10 round magazine. Ever since the election, most stores sell out of extra mags as soon as they come in. I ordered two more from bushmaster. I also found a local store today that had a box of magazines so i bought 2 more. NJ has a law for no more than 15 round mag capacity. I will be buying more soon.

Remember you maynot beable to pick up dropped mags. IE you will have to leave them as you run away. So more mags the better.
In Sandbox I had 11-30rd, 2-20rd for M4 and 11-15 rd for M9 on my person. Spares back at base.

jeff-10- who did i call retarded??

Did I offend you?

Think about this:

Magazines aren't free- lets estimate on average each mag cost $30 bucks. (some are more some are less) But that means 30*20= $600 just for magazines. If you are rich- more power to you- buy a million. For avg Joe gun owner that is ridiculous. You may as well buy 10 spare tires for your car.

Whoever brought up the point for mags that could be banned- good point- get a few spares. At the same time there are so many out there already if you really wanted one once a ban was in effect you could easily find some.

Marines carry a combat load of 180 rounds split between 7/8 mags (25+- in each). Of course, their rounds hit their targets. Do yours??

Oh and if anyone here actually is retarded- I apologize, I don't want to offend you.

If you're willing to commit a Federal felony, yes.

Under some iterations of proposed magazine bans, the full-capacity magazines you own on the date of enactment are the only ones you will ever own in your entire life, unless you break the law to obtain more. As I understand it, that is the way the much-ignored California magazine ban works.

Absolutely true.

You know what they call a semiauto without a magazine? A really complicated and heavy single shot that's hard to load, and a really awkward club.

Magazines *do* fail. The most common failure is that the feed lips spread over time due to the rounds being forced against them, or the lips crack completely. At that point, the magazine body is JUNK, no matter how well you tried to care for it. Doesn't matter how you babied it - it's toast. Throw it away.

Now what happens when you throw away your used-up/worn-out magazines and find out that you can't buy any more because they have been banned?

Pretty much sux to be you at that point.

Extra mags are spare parts. Stock as much as you would expect to need for the rest of your life, because (as has been proven in the recent past) they are easily banned.

Sure is easier to stock up now than risk being a felon by trying to buy some hi-caps after a ban.
