How many magazines?

Enough mags per gun to hold about 50 rounds to make buying easier. 8 round mags = 6 (48). 7 round mags = 7 (49), 9 round mags = 6 (54), etc.

For .22LR pistols I like to have enough to hold 100 rounds. I don't like loading ammo at the range, I'm there to shoot. I will admit I only have 5 for my DC, my LCP. I carry 1 in the barrel with a full mag in it and 2 as backup with 1 being the +2. That's 21 total rounds for daily carry. If I need more it's time to rethink my situation.

I like the idea of having at least 6 mags per gun, obviously that will most often times be more than sufficient but if one day 6 mags for your gun isn't enough for whatever reason, you'll be glad you have 6 instead of 1, no?

I have about 6 mags for each of my 4 Glocks and working on furnishing the rest of my guns with 6 mags each at least.

Its different for some peaople, some people want 30 semi's loaded for bear and two dobermans patroling the moat, others feel perfectly safe with a can of 15 year old OC spray and an umbrella, YMMV

More is better, especially hicaps.

It's not that you'll engage in a gunfight lasting thru 20 mags of 17 rds each, it's that you HAVE them should they be outlawed, lost, worn out, etc, etc.

I shot a match the other day that was made much easier by having enough loaded mags to get me thru the entire match without reloading a single mag. I went stage to stage with my "magazine caddy" carrier and score sheets, instead of a heavy range bag full of ammo and other assorted gear.

A boatlaod...

In addition to the hundreds in these Pelican cases, I have about 100 for 1911's in another bag (to the left), and likely hundreds more in other storage...

varoadking, All of my mags are preloaded. Are your hundreds of mags loaded up or empty? Just curious.

I must have OCD because if I buy a mag and it sits empty I just have to load it. An empty mags makes me nuts!

Like others, I adhere to the 6-plus rule for all working guns, save (3 or more) for the pocket .380s.

For sentimental/collector pieces that are decades older than I am (P38, Beretta 34, etc) one is fine.

I will admit to not really knowing how many 1911 mags are in the bin, however... probably enough.

David E - I've liked your comments in this thread. So, I'm determined to buy more mags for all my guns. I can see that four each just isn't enough. Thanks for your thoughts!

I like to have at least four for everything, but as many has possible for heavy use guns. Magazines are the weak link in any autoloading gun, so its always good to have a lot of spares. Lots of competitions need several mags, and its just convenient to have all that extra capacity in a gun you're going to be shooting a lot. I have 20 or 30 1911 mags, but the gun that's getting the most rounds through it right now I only have six for. Not only is it less than ideal, I find having that few incredibly inconvenient.

I personally have a minimum of 6 per handgun that I own. I have a detachable magazine Remington bolt and I haven't ever gotten around to buying another, as I usually load it up and have extra in a carry pouch that was my grandfather's. I don't know how many magazine I've picked up for my AR, fell in love with colt surplus 20rd and pick them up everytime I find them for less than $10-15.

Thanks!

To me, magazines for "serious" guns are like $100 bills........you really can't have too many of them.....

4 mags is a good start which is what I consider minimum for anything I'm likely to carry. I'll probably bump up to 6 for my daily carry gun if I don't fall in love with something else next time I have money burning a hole in my pocket. The idea of not downloading the mag in the gun and the spare mag that was suggested made a lot of sense.

My .22 plinker pistols use the same mag so I have 8 of them.

Oh, number your mags so you can keep track of which one was in the gun if you have a failure.

Reloading mags at the range isn't a big deal, my range isn't busy, I like to pick up my brass between runs, so I'm not trying to save time by loading up before getting to the range.

6 at a minimum. I got tired of only having 2 17 round Glock mags during the ban, and then everything else being 10 rounders... Right before the band, it was impossible to find hi cap mags. The distributors were hoarding them. And there wasn't much on the internet at the time (like there is now).

Since I have 5 Berettas, I have quite a few Beretta 92 mags, but several extra (probably close to 20 mags). But for everything else, at least 6.

Let me put it to you like this, if I have money in my pocket and I see a mag that is compatible with one of my guns and its not marked MSRP, I buy it.

I love having more than others think I need, that way when confronted with one of those "why do you think you need so many?" questions I can say: "why not". :)

3-4 per pistol, constantly buying P-Mags, but once I reach ten, I'm done. At that point, it's all ammo for me. If I need a reload and have already gone through 300 rounds, maybe it wasn't meant to be :D

I like to have a min of 4 per hand gun (the more the merrier) and for AR or high cap type weapons prefer at least 10.

You never know when they might be hard to get....

First post! Take care, Bill
