I think you need larger quantities in your poll. I case of sale-price 9MM and that puts someone over the top.

It says over 1,000. Any number above 1k would fit

Voted 500-1k (rough average)
I keep more than 1k rds for the guns I shoot most: 9mm & .22lr
I keep less than 250 rds for the guns I shoot least: 7.62x54r & .45lc & .410g

I was debating on buying a new gun awhile ago and started buying ammo instead. A gun is no more useful than a rock if it has no ammo.

Your ranges are hilarious dude, seriously.
I think you need larger quantities in your poll.

Some people can't read.
Others cannot comprehend what they are reading.
End result is the same--you get idiotic responses to a simple question.

Unfortunately, a lot of these same people vote...with predictable results.

To answer your question...I keep 5-6k of .22LR...because I cannot load it, and supply is a variable. Anything else? I keep enough components to load 1-5K rounds, depending on how much of that particular round I shoot.

I don't understand the need for thousands of rounds of ammo. I have no objections to it just don't understand. I'm a Nam era combat veteran and expect to be very dead before I expend a thousand rounds in a confrontational situation. Who or what are you going to use that many rounds on and survive? How are you going to transport them and to where? Sorry but the logistics just don't add up. Just my 2 cents not intending to offend anyone. Frank

I bet you expended tens of thousands of rounds of ammo while you were in the military. In confrontational situations? No. But isn't the key to surviving confrontational situations practice? If SHTF, and supply is interrupted for a while, I still would like to be able to practice with my weapons.

ammo on hand

For my pistols it is 500-1000 rds

Military rifles - 1000 rds

Hunting rifles - 200-300 rds

Shotguns - 500 rds

I probably have 10K rds total on hand

dont know cant count that high and I have been buying 2 - boxes or cases since I came home in 70. shoot the oldest buy 2 more, shoot 2 buy 4. get the idea.

And yes i give free to new shooters. and yes I will barter. and yes i will gift on B days No You cant come here.

Lawn boy gets a brick of 22 every 2 weeks.

I always make sure to have a couple of boxes of ammunition for each firearm, even if it's something I rarely shoot (I rarely shoot military surplus rifles, rather, I just like collecting them).

For my plinking guns (.22LR rifles), I'll usually have a brick or two on hand, as these are what I shoot the most.

For my hunting guns, I'll usually try to have several boxes of various ammunition that I've tested in each gun on hand, and I'll make sure that this grows rather than depletes (unlike my plinking guns). Expensive ammo, but it's worth it.

"I don't understand the need for thousands of rounds of ammo."

I shoot my guns and I'm too lazy to go to the store every week and buy a box or two or five.

Yesterday I mail-ordered some 9mm plinking ammo. It was $10 a box, so I bought 60. Shipping was about $60, so call it $11 a box.

"9mm GECO 124Gr FMJ. Swiss RUAG Mfg. 50rd box."

When the 1968 Gun Control Act was first passed, ammo was sold through FFLs and each sale had to be entered in a log book (name, address, Driver's license, make. caliber, quantity of ammo). You could not stop at country store or gas station on the way to the mountain and pickup a box of .22s as dad and I usually did in the pre-GCA days. (Those restrictions have since been relaxed.) I started stockpiling then. When the gun control advocates started making noises about restricting or punitively taxing ammo in the 1980s, I seriously got into keeping at least a five year supply for each caliber just in case.

I sometimes wonder if the gun control advocates secretly had stock in the ammo companies.

in a natural disaster or a 9/11 style attack that overwhelms the local and federal authoritys those who have food water and guns will keep it that way. Those with food and water only might not be as lucky, hopefully im wrong but Katrina changed my mind about the ability of FEMA to handle things if TSHTF

I try to keep 100-500 roounds for each caliber. Moved to Louisiana from Hawaii earlier this year so restocking slowly. So far I think I spent roughly $500 dollars this year on ammo. That dollar figure doesn't buy much these days...

and was wondering how much ammo you guys keep on hand?

You from the feds? :tinfoilhat: ;)

It'll buy enough powder, bullets & primers to put together a fair supply of 9mm & .45ACP. ;)

When most of my guns chew up 600 rounds per minute, a BIG stockpile is needed ;-)

I have somewhere near 20,000 rounds at the moment. + MREs and water bottles.

Hey, Glenn Beck told me to prepare for the end of the world or something. :D

If you were referring to my response, I did read and comprehend the question correctly. My reality just may not fit into yours.

"I don't understand the need for thousands of rounds of ammo."

If you buy a case, you get it cheaper and the shipping cost is lower.

I keep a up to date count of what I have on hand.
.22lr - 500
.40s&w - 100
.38sp - 236
.357mag - 192
.45acp - 413
.44mag - 147
12ga - 156 mix of slugs and 00Buck
7.62x39 - 700
7.62x54 - 400

I need more.

I don't shoot competitively, hunt or expect a societal collapse, but I have about 10,000 rounds of .22LR ammo... all because I hate lines.

Sometimes I have to go to Walmart. The main cash registers are always swamped. The sporting goods counter is not. So I pick up a $7 box of MiniMags and check out back there. They won't spoil but they do add up.

Frank, you make a good point; I do it for the same reason I stock up on anything, the thought of running out really bugs me. I don't believe we will get much warning before the hammer falls. The laws seem to sneak up on us and the next thing you know, certain types of ammo are banned. I'm not in California but look at what has happened there...

"Halo effect"

BTW Thank you for your service, you "Nam Guys" took away my "civies" and gave me a darn good career back in 79. I spent 24 years in the service trying to emulate you guys.

Holy cow. you guys got alot more than me. haha i gotta step my game up now.

You have no freaking idea.;)

I've seen some pictures that were well....:uhoh: Somebody mentioned need ing a whole room of the house to store ammo? Yup. These are the guys. Buy it by the case? HA! These maniacs buy it by the PALLET! :D

Barter? .22, x39 & .223 will be almost as valuable as toilet paper, booze & cigarettes.

And I live in Kalifornistan. Sacramento wants our guns in the worst way. They haven't gotten them yet so are going for the ammo. After that I'm sure they'll go after loading components. I don't cast my own bullets but am considering buying a few hundred pounds "just in case."

And no. I would not consider 50K rounds on hand absurd at all. I would consider that a worthy goal! :D
