Uberti 1866 Carbine replica, including the purchase price, action work, sights, etc., it's getting near the $1500 mark.

I've got a few dollars in this one
BnCSavage.jpg

Savage 10FP .308 - $550
Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist - $275
Millett TRS-1 - $300
Warne 1-piece picatinny Base - $70
Burris Xtreme Tactical rings - $55
Harris SLM Bi pod - $90
DIY podlock from tnuts.com - $7
Total - $1347

Not too bad I suppose.

My anything/anytime/anywhere gun is an early '80's SAKO .375 H&H AV with a $60 Weaver K4 El Paso using Leupold ring/mounts.....most folk would slash their wrists with a rusty dull hacksaw if they ever shot this rig or compared what I paid for it vs. what they paid for their favorite...it's the smoothest bolt action I've ever owned apart from my 1909 DWM Arg. CavCarb.....

The M1A is all GI parts: HRA barrel, TRW bolt and all like new. Paid about $600 for it and it would cost close to $2k today to duplicate. The walnut stock and handguard for it is wrapped up and stored. The DSA 58 set me back about $1,800.

Ehhhhh... I guess my new one!

Bohica .50 BMG Upper
Doublestar Lower
Lower Parts Kit
RRA Double-stage trigger
Super Sniper 20x scope
Rings

About $1595 Total. Not bad for a scoped .50 BMG rifle!

Got some class III as well, and that's lots of money. Excluding those, this one, easily:

Somewhere around $5000.

Money spent on any firearm isn't 'tied up'. It's invested. Even commercial hunting rifles tend to hold their value extremely well over time. A 5 plus year old hunting rifle will get you very close to what you paid for it.
"...would cost close to $2k today to duplicate..." It'd cost you more than that in time alone.

Let me think, I got my Remington 700 BDL 30-06, In 1971. I think I paid $125 or so. Redfield 4 power scope still on it. Around $25. Have not found a new rifle I like since. Oh yes my CMP M1 I got in 1975 around $100. Remember I trying to think back almost 40 years.

About $250.00 for a Ruger 10/22 DSP with a 4x28 Simmons Scope on it. Oh, add $5.00 for a nylon Wally World sling.

I've got a Marlin 39a, also, but I only paid $189.00 for it about 25 years ago. It's probably worth more today, but it ain't for sale, so that doesn't matter.

Most expensive by cost or value? My most expensive is my M1a... including optics about $2,800.00

My most valuable, including all accessories is my HK93 (cost about $2,000 - value about $6,500. The sub cal unit cost $300.00, I can sell it tomorrow for $1,200).

Then there is my Winchester 1886 in 50-110. I've seen these sell from $4,500 to $11,000.... I'm in this one $0.00

As one scans these posts one better understands the effect that the cost of fine optics (and other related accessories) hold to our sport. That is the reason that I assure that all of my rifles have piccatiny bases. The rifles may still be expensive, but at the very least, I can interchange any and all of my centerfire optics across all of my centerfires, be it a long-action Remington 700, a short-action Remington 700, a short or long-action Winchester, or even a Bushmaster or Colt AR.

I do the same for my .22LRs. In effect, I have two sets of optics: 1) centerfire and 2) rimfire. All optics can inter-change on all of my option-appropriate long guns. Don't forget to seek interchangeability in other accessories, such as bi-pod, sling, etc across all firearms types. It greatly reduces cost. For example, the same bi-pod works on any of my rifles, carbines, muzzleloader, shotguns and even my Contender pistol. Wow, talk about cost-effective.

Now? Most of my rifles now are fairly inexpensive in today's dollars. The most expensive one I put together was a Colt 9mm LE6450, Aimpoint Comp M2 and a carry handle mount, ~$1400.

If I bill myself at $10 per hour(a ridiculously low rate) then my .50 is already worth about 4K and hasn't fres a shot yet:). Waiting to be sent to the heat treaters right now.
