How to hang a long gun on a wall?

I've seen lots of little "gun hanger" items, usually with a deer head or something, meant for hanging a gun on a wall for display. I've also seen lots of the gun rack type wooden holders that hold 2-4 guns.

I'd like to hang a single gun in the home office, and I'd like something where the hanger is almost invisible, basically so it just looks like the gun is "floating" on the wall. Any ideas? If it matters, it will be an old Winchester 94. I'm pretty good at finding studs and screwing into them, just not sure what hardware to use.

As an aside, the gun is non-functional, and I'm not concerned about children getting to it or the pest control guy stealing it. Please keep the discussion simply to mounting ideas and not whether it is a good idea to have a gun on display.

Lowe's. or any hardware store for that matter, will have garage storage hooks to hang bicycles.
They look like an open C with on end bent into a lag bolt. Most of them are dipped in rubber.
Pre drill into a stud, and screw them in where you want them.
You can always cut them down a little so they don't look so big, and wrap como tape, or fur, or something , to hide the rubber, if it's too bright for your tastes.

If the gun is non-functional, you can attach some standoffs to the back of it that will fit their corresponding slots you attach to the wall.

Think "objet d'art" instead of "firearm" and the possibilities are endless.

I display a flintlock over the fireplace. I think if the display mounts are too gaudy, they're kind of in the realm of fuzzy dice. I just have two pieces of 1/2 birch dowel in between the bricks in the mortar joints. I don't find them to be noticeable at all.

Comes down quick in case of attack.

Monofilament fishing line, two drywall screws to wrap it around, and some wall paint to hide the screws. Since your Winchester probably weights less than 8 pounds, you can use some fairly light test line. 20 pound test is usually only about .018 inch thick, so that will disappear from view at a modest distance. You could use some small foam pads if you want it to stand off the wall a little.

I've got a 1883 Springfield 45-70 trapdoor w/ bayonette hanging on my wall. I just used 2 little coat hooks at a slight upward angle. One for the trigger housing and one just under the end of the muzzle. They hardly show at all. Send me an email if you'd be interested as how I hung it.

I do not have the solution but am subscribing to the thread in hopes that someone does.

I like the dowel or peg idea, but most of us don't want to drill 1/2" holes in the studs for them, and the gun tends to be topheavy when perched on pegs. This might work if each peg was mounted near the bottom of a small plaque secured to the wall. That would solve the standoff issue as well

Eyescrews and narrow black zip ties are another possibility, but could mar the gun.

Yet another approach would be 3" shallow shelf unit with shaker pegs or leather strap loops beneath.

I know there are some great ideas out there, so let's see them!

I'm not sure what you are going for as far as having a "floating" look, maybe there is something you are tying for that I'm not gettting. However for hanging a long gun I think the understated brass hangers that mongo posted a link to is the way to go.

Several companies make different types and it really couldn't be any more simple to put up.

Did something similar with some walking sticks we picked up on some trips. Used some deer stand screw in hooks I picked up at Wal-mart on clearance. They are similar to the ones mentioned for hanging bikes in garages, but are more straight than J hooked. They have a brown rubberized finish which helps them disappear in the shadow of the walking sticks. I'd give that a try.

I like the dowel idea. Sounds solid and aesthetically pleasing. I might use that one myself. I recently made a coat rack using dowels, why not a gun rack. . .

Small eyehooks on the ceiling with monofilament fishing line hanging therefrom. This way, you can move it away from the wall and see both sides of it. Maybe also use a ceiling-mounted spot light to illuminate it.
