How to remove this sight?

I have a Winchester Model 54 30-06 that has a Redfield peep site on it. I would like to pull it off and install a spare scope I have, to see how well it actually shoots. If I am correct, I should be able to pull the rear site up and off the mount, by pressing in on the button on the rear site. Is that correct? The button will depress but the site does not move at all. What am I missing?

Looks like the forward screw is broken. Loosen the one screw. Screw the sight ( not site: your title scared me) all the way up and add some kerosene, paint thinner or your favorite thread loosener behind the sight and on the button. Use the leverage of the raised sight to wiggle while pushing the button to pull up.

I'd start by searching on-line for a manual or instruction sheet for that model of Redfield sight.

Hopeful someone familiar with that model will chime in. All my peeps are Williams except my M1 Carbine.

That button is probably to raise and lower the rear sight, not to hold it on. In such cases, the Internet is your friend. Here is a sight identical to yours for sale elsewhere. Looking at the pictures provided, there are two screw holes on the back of the base, neither of which correspond to that button. Figure how to get those two screws out, and you're probably good to go with a little elbow grease and patience because it is probably seized up. My guess is you have to remove a few screws just to get the top part of the sight out to reach the attachment screws underneath it on the side.

Pushing the button releases like a half nut freeing the threads on the sight adjustment screw to allow fast course sight adjustment. Releasing the button reengages the threads on the screw for fine adjustment.

The sight "blade?" Must be removed to uncover the 2 screws in the sight base.

The screw that is showing only holds the adjustable pointer and it has been replaced sometime in the last 90 or so years. I don’t see a lock screw, unless it is a small set screw in the front of the base. The lock screw is normally next to the elevation slide. The elevation slide must be removed to gain access to the mounting screws which are hidden under it. The push button should allow the elevation slide to be removed by pulling upward. As already suggested, give it a bath of penetrating oil. Failing that, the elevation slide can be cranked all of the way out with the adjusting screw, many turns.

Sorry, I was typing while Central AZ was replying.
