I caught the single action bug again. I've wanted to shoot 45 acp out of a revolver for awhile now. How well does your Ruger Convertible shoot them? Any issues?

Here is an option for you if you are not married to the idea of a Ruger.

This is an Italian clone of the Colt. I installed an ACP cylinder on it in the 80s and have never used the other one. It is a much lighter and handier package than the Ruger. If you want it even lighter, wood grips make it near 3 ounces lighter.

My Ruger Convertible has the occasional light primer strikes on 45 ACP but I suspect the previous owner has swapped out the hammer spring. So I’m going to order a medium weight spring and see if that solves my problem.

I love mine. I shoot ACP mostly but when I need a snake gun the long colt cylinder goes in. I loaded 250 rds of snake shot in 45 LC 10 or 11 years ago still have most of it.

No marriage. Just less expensive than a S&W 25-2. I looked at a SAA w/ a conversion cylinder but was worried about poi with the 45 acp and no adjustable sights.
I have only used the 45 Colt cylinder twice, but the .45acp cylinder has thousands of rounds fired since I bout the gun in 2007.
This is most likely what I would do as well.

Mine are accurate, especially since I had the cylinders cut to .4525. The 45 acp shoots low, but that's because I zeroed the gun for tier 2 280 grain bullets in 45 Colt. At 7-10 yards it made one jagged hole. I'm running the Lipsey's flat tops.

Not a Ruger but my Colt SAA with a 7-1/2" bbl. shoots to point of aim with the standard 250 gr LSWC/830 fps loading and ~2" lower with the .45 ACP cylinder mounted. Both shoot to the same, centered windage point of aim....a rare gun that will do that, IMHO. Rod

Purchased mine in 2012. Love it! Extremely accurate with either caliber. Use fairly heavy loads in 45ACP and the 45 Colt! and its accurate and lots of fun to shoot. I shoot the 45 ACP and Colt about equally and both do a great job. A purchase I will never regret!

Apologies, I could have sworn I posted that .45 ACP standard loads of 230 grain bullets at 830-850 FPS hit point of aim from my New Vaquero. It has a 5.5” barrel. They are more accurate than many of my .45 Colt loads that are very accurate from my Vaquero and 25-15.
I was thinking the RNV was an accuracy lemon before getting .45 ACP cylinder.

Since I haven’t been shooting Cowboy Action I have put more .45 ACP through that gun than .45 Colt.

I have the Ruger Blackhawk convertible flattop in 45. Most of the time ACP is as accurate as 45 colt in mine. Not long ago however, I shot a box of Barnaul steel cased 45 ACP and it was shooting low. May have been a bit under powered. I got it because it was $19 for 50 rounds.

45 colt is more fun in my opinion :)

Edit: Grammer

I have had the Blackhawk convertible for something like ten years now and haven't shot much 45colt out of it. The 45acp has given me zero problems and is equally accurate. It shoots handloads and every kind of cheap range ammo just fine.

I also have a 625, and the Blackhawk is every bit as accurate and reliable.

I must have had bad luck with mine. I had a Ruger Blackhawk convertible I bought around 2018 timeframe. It shot noticeably worse with the ACP cylinder. Not necessarily bad, but definitely not as good as the Colt cylinder.

I was offered a trade for it (full disclosure) and took it.

I bought a new .45 Blackhawk Convertible in ‘95. It’s the New Model on the right.

Some time ago I wanted to see how much difference the “long jump” the .45 ACP takes to the forcing cone vs the .45 Colt. My practical experience had told me it didn’t make a difference, but it’s always good to put such things down on paper.

I attempted to load three bullet styles/weights as close to the same velocity as possible in both ACP and Colt cases. I assumed one bullet weight/style would be best in both cylinders. I was kind of surprised to see this was not the case.

Going from memory, but I’m pretty sure I shot these at 25 yards.

Bullets were a 195 gr. LSWC, 230 gr. LRN, and 250 gr. XTP. Here they are in both types of brass.

No issues. Shoots to point of aim. Great conversion. I carry mine with .45 ACP more than 45 Colt.

me too!

ruger blackhawk convertible single action revolvers in 45lc/acp and 357/38/9 are excellent additions to anyone’s tool-kit.
