Howcome The Browning Hi-Power Has Earned Very Little Respect Here At THR~?

Hello. MecGar is the OEM for FN/Browning Hi Power magazines. The ones sold under Browning's name and in their box can be had (or at least used to could be had) with the mousetrap ejection spring. I have not seen this offered on the MecGar-marked Hi Power magazines, but the company makes both and has for quite a few years now. I think that the mousetrap-spring-equipped magazines are a "Browning-marked-magazine-only" feature.

In my opinion, there is no better Hi Power magazine than that from MecGar, but it sold under their name or Browning's.

Best.

I think the BHP gets plenty of respect, just not much "airplay." Here's why:

1. It's not a new design.

2. It's dead dirt reliable.

3. It's not a 1911.

People talk about the 1911 all of the time, be it because of the usual "1911 vs Glock" crap, the high quality of custom pieces, or problems experienced with variations (some taking shortcuts or adding "features") of the design. The BHP does not have much of a custom aftermarket that can screw up the design and cause problems, or that really pimps it up. Are there custom BHPs? Of course, but nowhere near as many BHPs as 1911s.

So, it's an old design with very few issues and not a lot of modern bling. What's to talk about, besides the occasional, "hey, this gun is really good" threads, to which everyone who owns a BHP says, "well, duh." ;)

I don't have much need for a favorite gun in the safe. Every gun I own has a use other than being nice to have.

Congrats...

I have more guns than hands, some of them spend time in the safe. :D

Being that I live right next to the mountains I would wager I get much more use out of mine than you do in Palm Beach...so no need to come off condescending.

I shot a BHP in the army I loved it , small , light , easy to shoot , I dont own one now , but wouldnt mind getting one .

Holy carp! It's slightly more done up than I prefer, but it's still a beaut.

Nice HP.

I Love my BHP

Belgian made, I bought it new back in the 1980's. It has operated flawlessly since day one. Not my daily carry, but a joy to own and shoot. No complaints whatsoever.

What brand of safety is that?

I have a Belgian one as well, most accurate centerfire pistol I own.

The safety is the small, old style, which was built up/custom made by Ted Yost of Heirloom Precision. SRT

Well, this guy's getting a little old but it still shoots nice.

Feathers engraved on front and back straps (feathers, Hawk, get it?, <groan>). Oh well, limited choices with the serial number on the front strap - hard to checker.

Mostly C&S parts.

I have a 40 S&W BHP I bought new @ a going out of business sale at Jumbo Sports in the 99 or 2000. Most unreliable gun I have ever owned but I still own it because it looks and feels so good.

I am seriously considering sending it off to Cylinder and Slide to have it made to work reliably.

I liked them so much I have three. I once read that when an applicant passed the Delta Force selection course, Col. Beckwith presented them with a Rolex GMT watch and a Browning High Power.

I always wonder one thing... what is with the HUGE, apparently complex slide stop that BHPs come with? And what is that notch in the slide just above the trigger. I can't see how it interacts with the slide stop.

HaHa. What I am saying is that I don't have a bunch of guns, but what I do have I like. Yes, I would guess you do get more use than I do. I don't get to kill anything except paper and milk jugs
