HS 6

This is very timely thread for me. Yesterday an elderly friend asked me if I could use any HS6 as he had hoarded more than he can use. It's unopened and has been properly stored for several years. I load 38spl +P & 357 usually with HP38 or Titegroup(when using Russian spp). What I've read about using hs6 reloading 38+P is it can be used with SPP but benefits from using magnum spp and does better with heavier bullets(158gr). I'll use Hodgdon reload data. I think $40 per pound would be fair to offer him. Is that a fair price to offer considering current pricing?

$40/# is almost retail. Very generous and well worth it.

It does pretty well with 125 grain XTPs from my Blackhawk. It isn’t outstanding with 125 grain cast bullets though. I haven’t tried it in 38 Special and doubt I will with the two 9mm loads I have for it now. It probably works well with heavier bullets in 38/357 though I haven’t tried that either. I used 2400 for those.

I plan on using 158gr Xtreme RNFP copper plated for 38+P and testing with Ruger GP100 4.2". Considering no hazmat charge/shipping & tax if he wants $40 so be it. The same friend sold me 3k SPP for $90 to get me started.

I used 6.4gr HS-6 with a 158gr LRN in 38 Spl. Shot from a Ruger SP-101. It's lower +p, right at the line depending which data set you use. It shot well; clean, no problems, to POA with fixed sights.

If that fella sold you 3k Spp for $90 - anytime in the last 2 years - you owe him one. Just give him whatever he asks on the powder, and buy him an orange soda also.

It is Sunday morning, wife is at church, I got up early to burn a trash pile. These forums are big fun, all the back and forth, the subtle and some not so subtle digs. I have a lb of HS6, but I load alot more of Unique and 231. I purchased that lb at height of the component dry spell. One of these days I shall give it a whirl.
