HS 6

HS-6 is awesome... once you figure out what it likes! HS-6 is my favorite powder for high velocity 9mm loads, and a few others. It needs to be loaded hot or will not burn clean... it NEEDS PRESSURE to really shine. It has a very linear pressure curve and is quite powerful in the upper ranges of loads. I always use Magnum primers, and a firm crimp, regardless of caliber. You must push it hard to experience the best performance. It is very accurate.
Some of my pet loads, which perform great IN MY PISTOLS are: 7 grains with 115 grain Hornady XTP's, 6.6 grains with 124 grain XTP's, and 5.2 grains with 147 grain Berry's Hybrid Hollow Points. These are all very accurate, and probably in the realm of +P territory. I use CCI 550 Magnum Small Pistol primers in all these. The 124 grain loading is what I carry in my EDC, Sig P239. Outstanding accuracy and probably around 1100-1150 fps. Cheers!

I bought some only because that is all there was at the time for hand loads. Like yourself, I am glad I did. I've been loading in 9mm, .38 Special and .357 Mag. Where I differ is, so far, I've been loading mid range loads in each caliber and find it is an exceptional powder. I have Hornady custom dies and taper crimp and that works very nice while using XTPs and Federal Match SPP. Again, that's all I've been able to get my hands on for jacketed bullets beside powder coat from MBC and casting my own wc and swc for slower target loads. I

I was just planing on loading 38spl and 9mm. and hoping to find one powder for both. I looked around and found that w231 and HP 38 was recommended by several. At the reloading store I got a pound of w231, 38spl, 158gr Hornady xtp and 9mm, 147gr Hornady xtp. Loaded up some 38spl and now going on to 9mm. But, In my book I can find no data using w231 and 9mm 147gr xtp or any other 147gr bullet. Not in my book or any website that I've found Except Hodgdon data site.. They do list 147gr xtp starting 3.0 - 3.4 max w231. In my book Hodgdon does list w231 up to 130gr bullets but nothing over. So, should I use Hodgdon 9mm 147gr w231 data? Or move on and find another?
I've looked around and have seen that HS 6 powder works with most all 38spl and 9mm loads. And, in my small town the only reloading store has HS 6 in stock. It's a 70 mile trip that I don't want to make to the next reloading store.
HS 6 a good powder??
I have about 15 different pistol powders (I like to experiment), I think HS-6 is the most versatile powder Hodgdon (or anyone else) sells. It pops up with load data on just about every pistol caliber, based on the 5 load data books I have.
