I always find it interesting when first world people don’t understand that third world people love their children, spouses etc. Man eating is still a problem in some areas of the world and it needs to addressed quickly and efficient when it happens.

Could you only imagine the reaction if this were taking place in a suburb, in any city USA?

At least he is claiming that he will kill at last resort, and will try to tranquilize the cats.

Unfortunately I'd be worried with the Cubs that if they are reared on eating flesh of humans ,and taught to hunt in that matter that they would continue doing so. With the lack of natural prey in the area (according to the article) that's all they will know. Even if the cats are captured alive and relocated, one would think there is a good chance that the young cats would still resort to taking humans, even if there is plenty of game in the new location, again because that's how their mother taught them to hunt. Maybe youthinization is the only option in this case? Which would be unfortunate.

From coyotes to tigers peta types just don't understand that a predator will kill and eat anything it can. And that could include them or their children. Right up to the time they or their kids are getting chewed on.

The most humane, safest and most reasonable course of action here is to kill all three tigers. If they are caught they can never be relocated into the wild because they will return to man eating. Its what they know. If they are captured live they will have to be placed in captivity and they'll be very tricky to keep because of their man eating instinct.

Not sure I understand the benefit of hunting from an elephant, do they not fear tigers or will they aggressively attack tigers?.....like a mongoose that has no fear of cobras. I'd think a tiger could lunge at an elephant and possibly reach the hunter riding it. Mere thoughts about game I know nothing about.

Back in the old days tigers were just another addition to the trophy room.

I've read of two ways to hunt tigers. One is to build a blind (machan) and use bait. In this case, a small child as bait would probably not be a wise suggestion.

The other is from atop an elephant. The controller--mahout--guides the elephant as directed by the hunter. The elephant's ability to smell and hear is an early warning system.

Which is part of why they're now critically endangered. Man eaters should be dealt with, but trophy hunting populations below sustainable numbers is unacceptable.

The cessation of hunting in India occurred in late 60’s or early 70’s. Unfortunately their numbers have continued to decrease through poaching and loss of habitat. The very best thing that could happen to the tiger today would be a well regulated and tightly controlled tiger hunting program. It would pay to keep tiger habitat open and fund anti poaching. Once again people are loving these animals into extinction through their misguided emotionally based biases against hunting as a conservation tool.

If sport hunting of tigers was truely the culprit. Tiger numbers should be flourishing in the wild now.

Anyone interested in the art of hunting tiger, especially the predatory man-eating variety will enjoy reading anything by or about Jim Corbett, British hunter and conservationist in India in the years before WW2. Real gentleman of the old school, typically only hunted man-eaters and always refused payment for doing so. Hunted alone as well, sometimes accompanied by a small terrier type dog. Also one of the few hunters whose writing skills were on par with his fieldcraft.

It was from Corbett's writings that I learned the meanings of machan, mahout and howdah.

Not by Corbett, IIRC, but there was a recorded kill of a tiger via a .22 Savage High-Power. Phil Sharpe lists a load with a 40-grain bullet at 3,900 ft/sec.

Have you not seen the video of the Tiger attacking a person on top of an elephant?

I cannot search for it right now due to work restrictions but there is a vid on Youtube.

Which is the exact reason the howda pistol was invented. To shoot a tiger that climbs the elephant and tries to pull out out of the howda. A howda is the little box that sits on top of the elephant that the hunter and the mahout and the shikar sit in.
