Today I took the kid's deer hunting. The youngest, Coulter is a terrible shot, but he has the luck of the Irish. He has made incredible shots that many skilled marksmen would have trouble making.

He's been hunting for 4 or 5 years and has yet to connect on a buck, but has killed a lot of does.

Today I told him to find a trail and follow it for as long as he felt comfortable and sit down for a while.

He came back to the road in about 30 seconds with the head and rack of a perfect 8 point.

About an hour later some old fellow and his wife drove by in a 1962 vw beetle. They stoped to see how we had done. Coulter proudly showed off his find and the old gent immediately said "I shot that deer last year, but couldn't find it".

I talked to the old gent for some time and hinted to Coulter that he might consider giving the rack to the man who killed it. The old gent may never get another deer and Coulter, with his luck probably will. It made me kind of sad as Coulter wasn't about to give up his find and I could tell by the look on the old gent's face that he wanted the rack.

I wasn't about to make Coulter give up the rack, but I'm sure when he's older he will understand.

Perhaps I have just experienced the dark side of human Nature to many times, but while I would say that it is right to give up the rack to the old guy, having met to many liars in recent years, I don't think I would have unless I knew the guy and knew he was telling the truth.
