New Hunter in Oregon Looking for Mentor

Relatively new to firearms and hunting, looking for someone with experience in Oregon.

Interested in learning how to spot tracks and browsed vegetation, where to expect wildlife to be, etc. Interested in all the main game animals in Oregon: Roosevelt or Rocky Mountain elk, black bear, blacktail dear, or cougar.

I'm 28 and live in the Portland, OR metro.

Thanks!

I'm in Orlando and looking to get into hunting deer, turkey, quail, and dove (I do not eat pig). If you are interested in taking on a newb and teaching him the ropes then message me! In return I am pretty savvy with computers and marketing.

I recently jumped into shooting as a sport.

I am 25 (26 in August), engaged to a beautiful woman, and responsible. Just looking to get into something that I have always found interesting! Hopefully I get some hits!

Update, seeing as how it looks like there's no mentors in SF Bay Area, if there are any other noob's out there who want to join forces on a pig hunt. PM me and we'll see if we can get a hunt going.

If there's someone in Minnesota, preferably relatively close to the twin cities, willing to teach someone who's never had the opportunity before, I'm 26, responsible, patient, and eager to learn.

I'd be willing to try pretty much any kind of game, and any sort of hunting. I'd be particularly interested in learning bow hunting; I recently inherited a very nice bow but am not at all proficient with it.

Cheers.

I live in San Antonio Texas and I don't really know anyone who hunts, I am looking to buy a marlin 336 soon and want to take a deer this but I don't have any where to hunt or anyone to show me the ropes, any help would be appreciated

Since this thread has posts dating back into 2005, I'm going to take it upon myself to send a PM to everyone who offered to serve as a mentor in this thread, to:

1) Find out if the mentor still uses this site (and if the offer is still open)
2) Find out if the location is the same (assuming the offer is still open)

I'll give it a few days, maybe up to a week, and post the results. Seeing as it's that time of the year, I'd imagine that mentors would be checking in to see if they have anyone willing to learn. Maybe a moderator would be willing to update the first post with an updated copy of every mentor and his/her location and game animals? I think that would be practical, and super helpful. Just an idea.

Thanks, Bobson.

I am still in the market for a mentor, I know I'm not the only one. I missed an excellent offer about 4 years ago when I took a hiatus from the site. :banghead:

I can / will travel anywhere in my home state of Ohio, and am interested in hunting most edible game.... duck, geese, pheasant, grouse, small game (rabbit, squirrel), deer and wild boar.

If someone needs help on the western slope of Colorado I would be willing to give some advise or take you out on a hunt for elk or mule deer. The rules out here are strict so no tips or gifts in return just pm me if you need some help.

Update:

Eight days after sending PMs out to each mentor, I've heard back from around 20 of them. Fifteen are still wiilling and able to pass their knowledge on to new hunters. A few would like to, but life is happening, and can't for various reasons, but likely will be glad to teach again in the future.

I've sent another PM to each of the mentors who replied, requesting additional information. I'll post a table organized by region as soon as I hear from all fifteen. And I'll make sure castingdonkey is on there.

I know this is going to drastically reduce the number of mentors, and of course you're all free to PM anyone who posted here. My intent is just to offer a list of people who use THR on a regular basis who are ready and willing to help out. In other words, these mentors are a sure thing.

I replied late to Bobsons' PM. I'm still hunting and willing to mentor in N.E. Ohio. My original offer is post #4 on the first page of this thread. I'm now in Portage County, though, Garrettsville.

Just got it. Will post the updated list of mentors here tomorrow evening. I've only heard from about 20 of the mentors who posted here over the last few years (around 60 total), so I assume most of them aren't visiting THR regularly anymore. Its been a full month since I sent out the PMs.

I apologize for the delay on the updated list - I was hoping to hear from more of the mentors.

Updated List

I was going to include a column for the type of game each mentor hunts, as well as one for the tool(s) the mentor uses (bowhunting, rifle, etc), but the table was too cluttered, imo. Plus some of the mentors hunt every type of game, and use everything from rifle, muzzleloader, archery, and everything in between. I figured it would be better to let each "student" discuss the game and type of hunting with the mentor for his area.

I organized the list alphabetically by state, and tried to include a specific area of the region when applicable, if supplied by the mentor. I also did my best to keep the table clean, but it's still a bit cluttered... maybe a moderator can clean it up more effectively, if need be. Here's the updated list:

Obviously many of the people who offered to mentor over the years aren't listed here. Those who aren't didn't respond to my PMs over the last month. If I left anyone out, I apologize, and will fix it if it's brought to my attention. Thanks a lot to everyone who helped complete this. Best of luck to all you future hunters out there. :)
