hunting with a milsurp

I just bought a sporterized m1917 that I am hoping to use for deer hunting (if I can find a cheap place to hunt). I've seen others do the same. I am planning on purchasing one of the non-drill&tap scope mounts for it, and mounting a scope.

I use a couple of Enfields for most all my big game hunting. I do have a no gunsmith scope mount that I have used a few times but use the iron sites the most.

I shot one of my first hogs with a m-44. It was just about perfect for what i was doing. My brother also pointed out that if the hog charged I had a bayonet as a failsafe

I have shot several deer with a Swede 38 scoped. Yardages ranged from 35 to 150. Ammo was always handloads with 120gr. Nosler Partitions.

I used to hunt with a Yugo M-48A in 8mm and had it scoped with a Weaver fixed 6x. I had taken both whitetail and mule deer with it at ranges all under 200 yards. I had the original stock on it. I switched deer rifles simply because the M-48A is too heavy for my tastes. After carrying it all day it was hard to hold it steady if I had to shoot standing off hand.

i take my SKS out to hunt at least 4 times a year (usually for stalks and drives). i like it using open sights and have killed 4 or 5 deer with it. works great with hp's or winchester sp's.

this year I plan to go deer hunting with my Garand. I have the adjustable gas nut all set and will be running some cheap 150gr Federal soft points. I do not predict any problems. Will be hunting on a ranch with no appreciable other hunting pressure and have 8 tags (A tag, drawn B tag, and 6 surplus B tags). My only restriction is does only from the land owner (saves the bucks for his kids and they don't even go hunting every year). If I set it up right I bet I could get all of them in a weekend.

Completely stock Springfield 1903A3 as received from CMP. Loaded up some warm loads with Nosler Ballistic Tips and went hunting.

First shot at 80 yards or so went a little under, making the deer jump straight up and take off running. Unfortunately for the deer, he hid on the wrong side of a brush pile about 50 yards away when he stopped running, so I chambered another round and nailed him.

One thing to watch for on the mil-surps is regulation of the sights. With the rear sight set to 100 yards, my 1903A3 will hit about four inches high. I over compensated on my first shot, so I was a little under.

This year I'll be taking my mod 1908 Brazilian Mauser 7X57.. 175 gr off the shelf ammo. Never had it afield before (40 yrs). I can't wait!

I have hunted for several years with one of my 3 enfield #4's. One was "bubba-ized" by a previous owner and has a scope on it. the other 2 are stock.
All 3 work fine, I have shot 7 deer with them and none of the deer went more than 20-30 yards after being hit. Ranges have been anywhere from 40 to 110 yards. I have shot coyotes at longer ranges and I practice regularly out to 300 yds, so I have no doubt they will do the job on deer at that range should the opportunity present itself.

I've been using my M1917 for close to 40 years. Put a hand carved stock on 'er about 35 years ago and a scope about 20. Like carrying a tree trunk around, but after all those years it feels like an extension of my arm and comes up nicely, right on target. Have always wanted to change the trigger cause of the tremendous amount of creep, but have learned to snap shoot it like a scattergun.

I've done a good bit of summer season hog hunting with my sporterized Lee Enfield No 1. MkIII. I only use the iron sights, but it really doesn't matter at the distance I'm shooting at.

i plan on using my 91/30 this year for deer, and maybe coyote as well if i see a coyote when im out hunting.

1 with a Garand commercial ammo, 2 With a mauser 98 commercial ammo, 1 with a Mosin Nagant commercial ammo all Deer. 1 coyote AR15 I wouldn't use milsurp ammo to hunt with.

I took two pronghorns with my M-1A when Uncle Sam had me in Wyoming during the 80s. I also took it for elk season but the only elk I saw, somebody else saw first.

Well, I've used Spanish mausers in 8x57 and 7x57 both scout scoped and iron sights, M48 yugo iron sights, k31 with a scope, m44's with and without scout scopes,91-39 without scope and both yugo and romainian sks's with and without scopes. All of the above have taken at least one deer and most multiple. I use handloads for all but the sks's.

I have not hunted deer with a comercial rifle for 20 years or so.

Got a nice moose with my Win. M17. Past couple of years I got bit by the C&R bug and got a few other Enfields. I've been reloading for them and taking each out on different days to actuially use them during moose season.

And now I have to take out and give my new, to me, M1 a chance at a moose.

I've been using an FR-8 in 308 for close to 20 years now. I converted it to a Scout rifle and between my daughter and I, we've killed probably 10-15 head of game with it. She used mostly a cast bullet load, I use a 150 gr. Rem. Core-Lokt handload.
Last year, I took a doe with my Enfield #4 with issue sights and a handloaded, hand-cast bullet. The sights were TOUGH to use in the early morning light, but I got her. I expect I'll use it again this year, possibly even one of my Mosins.

Yep, I have a sportered M1917 as well. Scored in last two years' deer hunts. 150grn Federal SPs made easy work at about 75-100 yards. My grandfather willed me the rife, which he'd bought as surplus from the War Dept. in 1948 for about $5 (I have the original paperwork). Features a 4x Lyman scope.
Couple shots from last year's trip to Colorado:

Hope to use my .303 Enfield #5 on a pig hunt this year.
