Looking at what bullets would be very effective against soft bodies so I can have at least one mag of it. I'm looking at Maker bullets 300gr TREX, Lehigh 300gr Controlled Fracturing, or Cutting Edge 260gr Maximus copper solid. Kind of limited on powder and only have H110 and Lil Gun, so bullets over 400gr might not be ideal.
I already have FTX and Hornady 300gr HP's but I like playing with other rounds.

And yes, I know .458 Socom has overpenetration. 300blk is my main self defense caliber.

That caliber is about big holes at close range. Solids are just going to over complicate something simple. Cast lead would be just as easy.

It might make bigger holes

Even if it doesn't open up, it's still a big hole. But it can be bigger, which I think is important because you lack velocity. Kind of similar to using 300blk with subsonic loads and Maker bullets but I think .458 just expands way more (not sure).

Pretty much any load you put in it will get the job done, though you might end up taking out a few of your neighbors in the process…… If you really wanted to use it for home defense, I’d look for some compressed frangibles. If you just want a good, fun bullet, my buddy shoots a 500 gr coated cast bullet in his that is super accurate and actually fairly easy on the shoulder.

For home defense, I prefer shooting in a safe path which I've got plenty of. I'm more interested in most ideal bullet for maximum tissue damage, which is kind of important for a low velocity caliber imo. I could do cast bullets but I don't think I can reload anything beyond 400gr with the powders I've got on hand (there seems to be a major drought on powders in my area...).

I'd rather have max performance out of the caliber for given situation. Might as well considering I'm reloading anyways :).

I agree about blowing big holes in things, just know what's behind the direction you're shooting.

The 458 SoCom would be fine for home defense, I would make certain loads for that purpose.

I would use H110 and 405gn SP’s over any load I have tried in my 300 blk.

I have used them quite effectively on hogs in the 1100-950 fps range using HS-7 and HS-6.

I have pushed them as fast as 1608 fps using H110 in my 16” upper, those would have killed any living thing I have ever shot with a gun.
