i love 12 gauge shotguns that are chambered in 2 3/4in 3in and 3 1/2in as I love the heavy payloads of the 3 1/2in shells on turkey etc! so I found these two and they are brand new and so which one is the best? I also hunt small game up to turkey and are thinking on tryin some ducks and geese at some point! thanks guys!

The 525 is a 3.5" receiver with a standard 12 ga barrel. A far better choice would be a Mossberg 835 with the overbore barrel. It gives much better patterns, which is why the 535 has been discontinued.

but you can't run slugs thru the 835 as the manufacture states!

I’ve got the Remington Super Mag and honestly couldn’t ask for anything better. It does everything I need it to do and having the ability to shoot 3 1/2 shells is always a bonus even if you don’t necessarily need it.

If you absolutely have to shoot 3 1/2" shells the Benelli Nova is the only option I'd want. A good argument can be made for the Mossberg 835. The 535 and 870 are far too light to be shooting 3 1/2" loads though them.

The only possible use for 3 1/2" shells is for long range, high volume geese hunting with steel shot. There is no practical reason to shoot shells that big with any lead shot. A 3" shell will be more than adequate and even heavy 2 3/4" shells would do 95% of what most shotgun hunters need. Even most waterfowl requiring non-toxic shot can easily be taken with 2 3/4" or 3" steel shot.

Geese are big birds and require big shot to hit them at longer ranges, 50+. Big steel pellets take space in shorter shells leaving patterns pretty thin for long shots at big birds. The best option is non-toxic shot other than steel, but they get expensive. For the occasional shooter that is the best option along with 2 3/4" or 3" shells. But if you're the type who goes though a case of ammo every hunting season the cost is a problem. The 3 1/2' shells shooting bigger steel shot is a cheaper alternative.

Recoil with steel shot, even in 3 1/2" shells can be manageable. But 3 1/2" turkey loads from a lighter gun like the 2 you're considering will have recoil in the 70-75 ft lb range. That exceeds 458 WM recoil by a sizable margin; more than double 12 ga slug recoil. If I'm about to be stomped in the ground by a charging elephant 75 ft lbs of recoil is acceptable. But there is no 15 lb turkey worth that much recoil.

That's true, you'd need a 535 barrel or a dedicated slug barrel. I will note that the OP said he wanted to hunt turkey, ducks and geese and nothing about shooting slugs.

Personally, I would take the Beretta A400 Xplor Unico with the Kick Off. Mine handles even my 3/4oz reloads but is also 3.5" capable. A gas gun with that recoil system does a lot to tame the recoil. With the shims, it can be made to fit a wide variety of folks, even LH folks like me....

well I went with the Mossberg 535 but before I did I went gun shopping around but didn't find anything I wanted but a old ted Williams model 100 30-30 I liked so I hope later it's still there as I would like to own it!
