I am Legend is out on DVD. Had to buy it since I enjoyed the movie. Still, there are a few problems. Things I like to think I would have thought of.

1) Holster? There are several occasions in the movie when it would have been helpful to have the gun on the hip, rather then somewhere else.

2) NVG's? :what: 'enuf said.

3) Couldn't he get any of the APC's in the beginning of the movie started. Would have been better then the Expedition.

4) How about UV lights in the basement? Speaking of which, was that the most fortified position to live in?

3) was covered already in the original I Am Legend thread; an APC is a crew-served piece of military hardware. It is expensive to manufacture, costly and time-consuming to maintain, and nets absolutely atrocious gas mileage. Not to mention it would tear up asphalt wherever you drive it. Not exactly the most pertinent thing to keep in drivable condition if you're the only person around.

I'd personally have gotten an Excursion or other very large SUV, or maybe a crew cab dually pickup truck, or even a Peterbilt; but not military hardware. That stuff is too difficult and time consuming to maintain properly (especially by yourself, and with an isolated supply pool).

In the old days of making movies, the cast and crew would appear on stage at the premiere: critics from the newspapers and magazines would be invited to ask them questions or comment on the film they had just watched. When "Stagecoach" premiered in 1939, the film's director, John Ford, was asked by a particularly astute critic who questioned the lengthy climactic chase scene: "So why didn't the Indians just shoot the horses?" Ford snarled, in typical fashion, "Because then the movie would have been over." It's always best to leave logic behind when you watch a movie. :)

I bought the movie too. Hadn't seen it.

I was curious what make AR that was.

Also, it seemed stupid to use medium-wave AM transmission as a way to contact people.

Not stupid at all. The AM frequencies (we must assume he was broadcasting from a local station) have the potential to go all over the world if the atmospheric conditions are correct. That's not so with FM or TV frequencies.

That said: I just watched it today. Where was he getting his electric from?

How did one guy install all that heavy metal shielding on rails in his home?

After 3 years most every building would be water damaged or otherwise yet the places the legend guy was going were pristine.

Hunting deer out of a car while driving it? :banghead:

How did the mindless subhuman monsters get smart enough to set that trap he got caught in?

You could kill 'em by shootin' them but they could slam themselves into a solid glass wall they could barely make an impression on at bone crushing speeds and just keep on coming back for morel without damaging themselves at all.

:banghead: STUPID: JUST FREAKIN STUPID :banghead:

My 16 yr old niece thought it was great so I guess the $15 bucks spent on buying the DVD wasn't totally wasted.

How did the mindless subhuman monsters get smart enough to set that trap he got caught in?

That's part of the point, he was underestimating them the whole time.

He remarks in a journal entry that they are willing to ignore their basic survival instincts, and attributing it to the last step in their devolution, ignoring that he himself had just done the exact same when trying to rescue his dog. It was that attitude that resulted in him thinking they were far less intelligent then they actually were.

Where was he getting his electric from?

Doesn't it show him running a bunch of gas powered generators?

I try not to be too critical when watching a movie like that. But a Russian/SVD-style scope on a US military M4?

I was very disappointed with the movie because of how great the book was. The movie pretty much sucked after he met up with Ana (which was the point that they threw out the plot and rushed to the end)

One thing from the movie that did not make sense was why he did not stay on the boat. He obviously had enough access to loot the armories, so i dont see why he wouldnt just move to and fortify the boat instead.

I assumed the trap he got caught in was one he had set himself. The scene completely showed that he was losing it. I think he lost it and that accidentally lead him to stepping in his own trap. The trap was very similar to the one he used to catch the girl.

No, it was most definitely set by the dark seekers. His traps used a tarp so he could drag the dark seekers from the interior (where they'd be during the day) to the outside world without exposing them to sunlight, thus preserving them as test subjects. Also Fred was the bait, Fred had been positioned by the video store, so he had been moved sometime at night. On top of that, it was setup next to an area that blocked sunlight near dusk, thus allowing the infected dogs earlier access to him.

It was a fresh trap with fresh bait set up by the dark seekers. :)

I found myself wondering if a modern fuel injected engine would be happy running on 3 year old gasoline.

And of course, the holster thing.

Also, it made no sense at all that virally infected flesh eating people would have super human strength and speed.

The original movie adaptation of this book was made in 1960s with Vincent Price, it kind of sucked, but was true to the story. The second was the Omega Man with Charleston Heston, made in the early 70s. The dark seekers in that movie were much more believable, kind of weak and sad. That was one of my all time favorite movies... at least before Star Wars came out.

I was really disappointed in this latest remake.

he should have used a heavy (real armored) armored car truck for transport.

His choice of rifle for deer seemed foolish and underpowered for the prey. a old .30-06 bolt gun would have much easier/more effective.

I am pretty sure anyone on earth would hunt more intelligently than high speed mustang cruising. beyond stupid really. Cripes a meter maid car would have been more stealthy, better visibility and more manueverable under those conditions.

way too little effort in securing his base of operations. security shades on the inside but no bars on the windows. Perimeter explosives but no razor wire.

there's probably a good hundred stupid little things he did to make sure when it really hit the fan he was unprepared,

The part that irritated me most about this movie is the same thing that irritates me about many "killer virus" movies - the infected people do impossible things. I'm not talking about speed or strength - it's possible that a virus could cause muscle hyperplasia or something. But when the zombies "roared" in this movie, their mouths are HUGE and open extremely wide. Are we supposed to believe that a virus alters their skeletal structure? And yet that the bones can completely re-model within a day of receiving the antivirus?

I'll play.

Disclaimer: I am WATCHING "I Am Legend" now. I haven't finished it yet. I just can't tolerate going to the theater anymore to watch a movie with all the people talking and using Cell Phones. My blood pressure doesn't need that.

What I can see so far:

1) Holster? There are several occasions in the movie when it would have been helpful to have the gun on the hip, rather then somewhere else.

True.

2) NVG's? 'enuf said.

True. But it is STILL better to not be out where you are outnumbered and with a limited field of view.

3) Couldn't he get any of the APC's in the beginning of the movie started. Would have been better then the Expedition.

What they said.

4) How about UV lights in the basement? Speaking of which, was that the most fortified position to live in?

True, and No.

Also, it seemed stupid to use medium-wave AM transmission as a way to contact people.

AM or Shortwave would probably be the BEST choices.

Where was he getting his electric from?

At least 4 generators were running in either a utility room or garage.

How did one guy install all that heavy metal shielding on rails in his home?

I am sure he saw a show on HGTV on it. Hell, my wife watches it all the time and that may be the ONLY thing they haven't done a show on.

Side note: HGTV is a VERY dangerous channel. It gives people the illusion that they can actually do that stuff and come out looking as well as they do. They don't tell you that you are more likely to pinch off a toe or open up an artery-- and STILL have to call a contractor.

After 3 years most every building would be water damaged or otherwise yet the places the legend guy was going were pristine.

Not necessarily. We have several metal buildings that we haven't done maintance on in years-- and in two cases-- decades. No leaks yet.

Hunting deer out of a car while driving it?

I've killed 3 deer from my vehicle. Mind you that I didn't intend to-- and each was to the tune of about $3K in damages.

But you are right... I screamed at the TV when I saw that.

But a Russian/SVD-style scope on a US military M4?

Like they said... it was a Trijicon ACOG. They just thought the PSOP recticle looked cooler.

One thing from the movie that did not make sense was why he did not stay on the boat.

I suspect keeping a generator or two running is a tad easier than keeping a Nuclear Reactor working.

An Aircraft carrier would also have a LOT of doors to secure. But they would be easily secured.

most here would have blown there head off after 7 days of no internet.

True. During Katrina, I almost went nuts for about a week. But then it became refreshing to just go with the flow. After another week, I didn't think about it. After 8 weeks, who cared.....

His choice of rifle for deer seemed foolish and underpowered for the prey. a old .30-06 bolt gun would have much easier/more effective.

But it would do the job. SHTF isn't about ideals. It is about what will work. Remember, he was a military man in the movie (instead of a factory worker in the book). He would have been more familiar with the M4, and likely never considered the matter of heavier calibers.

Also, he WAS in New York City. From the times I've been there, gun stores where you can get a Remington 700 aren't on every street corner.

way too little effort in securing his base of operations. security shades on the inside but no bars on the windows. Perimeter explosives but no razor wire.

Agreed.

FINAL COMMENT:

I still haven't forgiven the book OR the movie for killing the dog. Why the hell do they do that crap???

None of you have addressed the fact that ALL of the deer looked like bucks.

Someone watch the 'version not showed in Theaters' and let me know if we are missing anything.

Good catch Atla.

Last night I screamed at the TV and told Jenn:

"Bucks don't travel and move together!"

You may see a number of does together, but rarely-- if ever-- see a bunch of bucks.

The alternate version brings out the "human" side of the Dark Seekers. From what I've heard it is much more correct according to the book.
