I am still livid!

Ditto, I agree however.

Being in Cali, I can see some of the fustration that is being expressed by "if we can't have them, the police shouldn't have them". I think it's due to the fact that (at least in CA) there seems to be a two tiered level of citizenry.

There is the LE and criminal comunity that can have pretty much any toy they want. And the regular law abiding folks that have to make due with SKSs and other 10 rounder/less firepower.

two cents

The North Hollywood shootout was a bizarre, unique
situation, unprecedented and unrepeated. The LAPD
spendt a lot of time and money prepping to handle
a repeat.

That's like all the navies of the world in the 1920s
and 1930s planning to refight the Battle of Jutland.
A lot wasted on a oneshot flash in the pan.

Personally I'm all in favor of cops having rifles in their cars.
I can see why, but it raises the spectre of over penetration and collateral damage to a major problem.

Out here in kali, most of our cops really don't like guns and consequently, don't practice with them and are not skilled with them (at least, no where near the level one would sensibly require for an LE).

We had a bank robbery shootout in San francisco where the cops fired more than 150 shots over a period of time and NOBODY got hit..... that is seriously scary.

I am not sure I want these guys toting M-16's.

One thing frequently missed is the fact that the LE are just people and tend to be like the people who live in the state..... in a mostly liberal state where people hate guns, most of them tend to be the same way (not all, and it does depend on the region of the state).

It was very clear when the San Jose PD chief McNanmara teamed up with Feinswine to do anti-gun ads... and a small minority within his department released their own rebuttal ad.... and Mcnamara threatened to fire them all. The ACLU defended the "voice of the few" under first amendment and McNamara got his butt kicked in court (probably the only time the ACLU and the NRA were aligned on an issue).

That pretty much reflects the state: mostly they think guns are evil and NOBODY should have them and you should just let the police defend you in all circumstances.
