I am the main cause of the ammo shortage

Like tho OP , I have sevral different calibers. Most I do not shoot. Just liked the rifles, so got them and try and always have 40-60 rnds for each, 7.62x54 and some 303 british.
Same for '06 and 45-70.
But I cast and load for most of what I have 45LC and 45acp and 38s.
Always tried to keep a general supply of componets. I shoot CAS alot and haven't bought primers in a few years, and probably won't need to for several more.
22s are hard to find , so I don't take the grand kids out as often as I used to. When we do, its only 2-300 rounds per outting. Got about 800rnds left. Won't get under 500, for the 22 its been a rule for me.

You completely missed my point. My point is how many people out there are reacting exactly like me.

I'm not. The reason is simple 5 years ago I decided for every round I fired I would replace it with two, and as soon as ammo comes back again I will start that cycle all over again.

One nice about the shortage is, my indoor range is not nearly as busy as it used to be..

So figure how many people are reacting like me.
You mean buying ammo after it is scarce? I am not one of them. I like to shoot a variety and I have stocked plenty of ammo for them all over the years. Haven't bought any ammo for awhile....when I do it is usually just to try some different JHP ammo..
I own many different firearms in; .22, .25acp, .32acp, .380acp, 9x18, 9x19, and 7.62x39.
I have muzzle loaders in .36, .45, .50. .58, .67, .69, and .72 . (okay, I do cast my own round balls and knap my own flints).
I have air rifles and pistols in .177, .20, .22, .25 and 9mm.

Variety is the spice of life. :D

2 minutes!!!

The time I got an email notification from MidwayUSA for Aguila 60gr sub-sonic 22LR to the time I went to the site. By the time I got there, I got the "Sorry, but we are sold out...blah...blah...blah".

How is this possible??? I'm not a tin-foil hat kinda guy but I think I'm beginning to become one. If this whole ammo shortage thing wasn't a gun control thing, it sure as hell should be 'cause it is working.

I do agree that there are a lot of new gunowners out there. That to me is a good thing. Im fairly new at it myself (about 3 yrs now). Just be patient and buy when you can. I wouldnt worry about being considered a hoarder. I shoot every chance I get and I shoot as much as I can. I have bought more than Ive ever had before, but I dont want to get a chance to shoot, and not have enough to enjoy myself. I would like to get into reloading. This should pass and hopefully we will put a more gunfriendly person in the white house next time (still cant believe he made it twice). Happy shooting.

How is this possible???
Because there are a bunch of folks just like you who have signed up for the email notifications and immediately respond by purchasing ammunition when it comes in stock.

Count me in again.
Five more boxes of 'British' .303 will create a price spike whenever Midway (or whichever) sends the 100 rds. to our home.
The prices finally dipped a bit under $20/box. Prvi from Serbia is the only .303 that I buy.

Just the thought of long-term major problems caused by future US compliance with the UN Small Arms Treaty gives me an image of foreign ammo as endangered species.

I have just shy of 9000 rounds of various calibers. I also have many reloading components and reload. Much of what I own I purchased when prices were low and I purchased a lot of really rare ammo (several thousand rounds of M2-AP) that I don't intend to shoot. I also bought lots of it when I could find it cheap like 1600 rounds of 5.56 green tip, 1500 rounds of 7.62 NATO and etc. It has taken me a while to get to that point and I am only shooting reloads at this point until the brass gives out. Then I shoot some more factory for the brass.

I'm not part of the problem.

I haven't bought ANY ammunition since December, except a few boxes of 44 magnum for a new Super Blackhawk that I bought. (Never owned a 44 before).

But I have tens of thousands of rounds stockpiled from previous years. :)

It's never good to try to hoard during an ammunition shortage.

Which is why I haven't bought any ammo.

When prices and supply get back to normal(ish) I'll start buying ammo again, I'm sure. In the meantime I'm busy with other stuff. Like buying #10 cans of nitro packed freeze dry food whenever it goes on sale. :)

Cosmoline, that's one of my favorite scenes of any movie of all time. :)

Others on here have seen my gun room pics but not everyone ventures over to the reloading forum.

So... a revival of a couple. :)

Trent: You're my kind of guy. A friend has a similar quantity stored in a vault, but not so well-organized.
Somebody on THR explained how to easily remove my Nato 7.62 from ammo belts.

It would be impolite to ask, but it appears that the several beige crates of eastern Euro could be x54R.

Every time I read one of these threads, I start to get depressed. Hell no ammo out there to buy or shoot, that IS sad.

Like I said I get depressed over it. Why I do not know, I haven't purchased a single center-fired cartage for rifle or pistol in over 7 years. Did buy some shotgun shells for the new Weatherby 12 gauge this year, but nothing else, so I know I am not the reason for any shortages.

I think this all has to do with what is called a "self fulfilling prophecy". We think we have a ammo shortage, so there will be an ammo shortage. We go out and create it. (the shortage)

I have even stopped going out shooting because of all this craziness. I just keep reloading and reloading more and more ammo. Before this all began I had loaded enough ammo to last me for 5 to 10 years of normal use.

If you all just stop panic buying (yah, like that's going to happen) I am sure in time the shelves would magically refill them selves and there would be more than enough ammo for everyone.

15,800 rounds of 7.62x54R, about 40% russian, 60% bulgarian, purchased last summer for $64/440 from AIM.

I got that PKM last year and wanted a ... bigger supply. :)

In the first pic I posted, all those little cans tucked behind the x54R crates are Malaysian 7.62 NATO. Those were purchased in '08 for $55/300. That ammo is a touch hot for bolt guns but holds 1MOA in my FNAR and just over 1MOA in my SCAR17S.

Point I'm trying to make, I learned something about surplus ammo over the last 15 or so years. The price never comes down and once supply dries up it really ramps up. Look at the old (highly desirable) Radway Green 223 hanging in the bandolier, the old South African 7.62 we used to get for 10 cents a round in sealed battle packs, etc.

Hell, even 7.62x39 and 5.75x39 7N6 are good examples. I used to get cases of Wolf for $55/1000.

My advice, when a new surplus ammo hits the market.. buy hard. :)

No, you're not.

Your government however, is.

I've always cracked up living in a couple different disaster/shortage prone situations when an individual or group would imply that me and mine are "hoarding" when the thing we have - which they don't have or don't have enough of - has been in my/our possession since long before the contemporary need.

Just cause I may be perceived to have more than I need (by another's standards) doesn't give any one else right to claim over it.

I guess the thirsty shoulda looked to putting up more water.

or

I'd rather be the ant and suffer the abuse of the grasshoppers while looking after my own.

I was a casual shooter...once a month or so I would go to the range. Also would take my son shooting out on the families land. But we shoot more 22lr than anything. But I just haven't been shooting since the crazyness. I even let my son down a few weeks ago because I had no 22lr. So now, I just sit and wait for this nonsense to end.

It's sad because shooting is one of the best father-son things I can do. It's an area that my teenage boy actually wants to hang out with me and do. It's pretty hard to get him away from his girlfriend with any enthusiasm.
