excellent job!
but... you left out too many details, man!

you say 'b&c', so i guess that means a rifle (handgun?) was used... but, caliber? distance? hunting method? did'ja know he was there before, or were the both of ya surprised one fine morning recently??

nice deer, though! good hunting!

I have decided to remove the pictures and the story of how I killed my book deer. Do you people really believe I am stupid enough to make this post if I killed the deer out of season and had illegally baited it? Fact number 1. Gun season on MLD managed lands has been open in Texas since October2. Fact number 2. Baiting is legal in Texas.

I wanted to see what you got. If it was a B&C deer I am always way interested. Baiting may not be the way to go everywhere but it sure is in TX. IMHO
I had a pal back in Carolina that used to look down his nose on people that baited. This same fellow hunted the edge of one of his Dad's corn fields that they ran over with Noah's original picker right off the Ark. The one that left about half the corn in the field. Oh yeah he didn't see how that was on the same scale as just putting out a feeder.

Anyhow, best of luck with the rest of your season M16.

1. I thought you had used B&C when you meant P&Y and NEVER intended to imply the deer was taken out of season.

2. I have never had access to any MLD or LAMPS land and am not familiar with exact regs except what is found in the Annual that states

"MANAGED LANDS DEER (MLD) PERMITS: Permits issued to landowners with a TPWD-approved Wildlife Management Plan. MLD permits allow hunters, at the discretion of the landowner or agent, to exceed the county bag limit and (in some cases) to hunt during an extended season. All deer taken on a property for which MLD permits have been issued must be tagged with the appropriate type of MLD permit. NOTE: No license log entry or tag from a hunting license is required for deer killed under a MLD permit (see license log requirement pg. 63). For more information about Wildlife Management Plans, landowners should call TPWD at (512) 389-4505."

I'm sure the average hunter in Texas would have made the same assumption but furthermore as I recall you never mentioned that you were hunting MLD land.

3. There is NO such thing as an ILLEGALLY baited deer in Texas. There are regulations against placing corn, etc on certain public lands like the National Forest (new regs in fact) but that is all. I personally have nothing against use of bait and love to hunt Oak Thickets in the Piney Woods because deer love acorns even more than corn and am trying to get clarification from the Forest Service that it is OK to haul 50 lb sacks of White Oak acorns in to scatter around.

I apologize if my previous post offended you. It was NOT meant to attack your integrity or the legality of the harvest of your SUPERIOR buck. Please re post the pictures and included as detailed description of the hunt as you choose as I probably will NOT get a chance to hunt this year and must live vicariously through the successes of other hunters like yourself.

WOW

I wanted to comment about how this post was one of the most viewed over the past few days, true hunters wanting to see another persons trophy.

I guess we are denied.

If you did take that deer legally, then you should have no fear in leaving the pictures up. The fact that you deleted them makes you look guilty.

Now "buck" up (no pun intended) and show us those picks. I am headed out this weekend and I am excited.

i've seen the pics and read the story on a more hunting-oriented site... good story, good pics, great buck!

too bad he felt compelled to take 'em down, but not sure i'd do anything differently were my ethics challenged as well...

Maybe I am too sensitive but if people have a question whether something is legal or not how about sending them a private message. Rather than have a "legality cloud" placed over the taking of this deer I decided to delete the post.

I know that baiting deer is illegal or considered unethical in some states. In Texas it is both legal and quite common. I didn't need to mention this in the story I wrote but did so because I believe in being honest and upfront.
Here are the pictures and story.

It's official. The green score is 170 6/8 net typical and 182 gross. Now it's just waiting for the 60 day drying period. Now for the rest of the story.

It all started Saturday morning when I was sitting on a small hill looking down a sendero. I had baited the sendero at daylight with some shelled corn. I saw two bucks come out of the brush about 3/4 mile away. At this distance I was able to tell that one of them was worth getting a closer look. I was using a Swarovski 20X60 spotting scope mounted on a rifle stock. I headed into the brush to try to get closer because there were some other deer between me and the bucks. When I had bypassed the other deer and had closed the distance I crawled back on the sendero but the bucks had left.

During the noon hour I went back to camp and picked up a tripod. I met my brother who hunts on the ranch next door on the road. He wanted to know what I was up too. So I told him about the deer I had seen. So he got in my jeep and we went to set the tripod up close to where I had seen the buck. Luckily he had some camoflage netting that I could use the help hide my outline while waiting for the deer to show. We then left the area.

I left camp around 5p.m. and headed for the tripod. I dumped some corn out on the way. The temperature was 95 degrees. It sure didn't feel like deer hunting with mosquitos and gnats buzzing while you are sweating like a politician in church. Anyhow after about 30 minutes 3 bucks step out of the brush in three different areas. The middle one was a muy. I looked at him through the spotting scope to make sure he was big enough and old enough to shoot. I decided he was and got ready.

I was using a 7mm Mag Blaser with a Ziess 3.5x10 milldot. The deer started feeding away from me and was around 150 yards. I cocked the Blaser and put my finger on the trigger. Buck fever was starting to set in and I could see the crosshairs starting to jiggle. I looked away and took a couple of deep breaths. Now that's better. The deer keeps feeding directly away from me only leaving me a Texas heart shot. I was ready if he would just turn broadside.

Twenty minutes later he was still feeding away from me. I had one smaller buck fifty yards away and staring a hole through me. I couldn't move a muscle or blink an eye. My right shoulder was getting numb. Finally the smaller buck turned and started feeding away from me. I looked down another sendero and saw one of the other hunters headed my way in a Bronco. If he got much closer he was going to spook the deer and it was gonna be all over. He didn't know that I was hunting at this spot and kept coming. When the big buck heard the approaching vehicle he finally picked his head up. The pressure was on it was now or maybe never. The buck was at a later measured 200 yards. Another deer was in front of him so it was a neck shot or nothing. I had just shot the gun at 200 yards before heading to the ranch so I knew it was on. The rest was like being in slow motion. Crosshairs on the neck. Squeeze the beautiful 2.5 pound Blaser trigger. Boom! Whop! He's down! It's over.

You may be wondering how I was gun hunting in Texas in October. Our ranch is on a level 3 managed lands permit. We are allowed to hunt anytime there is an open deer season. The buck was killed in Maverick County. I wasn't hunting for a book deer and I wouldn't feel any different if he didn't make it. I guess it's just icing on the cake.

Thank you for the story and picture. That is a beautiful critter. I'd be green with envy if I had taken him.:D

Last year I got to hunt near Brady and I got a nice buck. Not the same class as yours but still a good TX buck.

My gang took several others but by the end of the 3 days we hunted I was pretty well convinced (a) there weren't any really big bucks around or (b) they had been educated and were playing it safe. Mostly (a).
The guy that owned the lease indicated there was a really big 10-12 point + on the property but by the time I left I figured that was the George Dickle talking.

On the way home we pulled into a little gas station to pick up ice and right next to where we parked was a white Ford PU with one of the most beautiful deer I've ever seen. It was a lot like yours. Big body, big rack, beautiful shape and proportion. So much for (a) and (b).

I sure would like to go back there this year and see if I can find one like that.

Best of luck with the rest of your deer hunting season.

WOW!
Nice buck Bro!
I'm hoping to get one this weekend. Around here, unfortunately, one of that size is quite elusive and probably REAL NOCTURNAL.

I am jealous!!!!

on a baiting note... has anyone heard of the technique where you borrow an item from someone during their special time? I am trying to be as cryptic as possible, to stay on the high road, and not offend Art's Grammaw. Anyone that knows what I'm talking about, does this work? Some guy told me he swears by it...
