I have been spending more time on foot hunting pigs during the day, and it can be pretty intimidating rummaging through thickits with a bolt or even lever gun. An auto is so much more comforting. I have several of both, but I am now trying a rig that gives a little more comfort for close-quarters. It is a CAI "polish" 1960; milled receiver, greenmountain barrel, Ultimak/aimpoint combo, ironwood furniture, arsenal 10 round hunting mag, ak74 brake. It groups really well for an AK; I have placed 30 rounds into tangerine sized groups at 35 yards.

Let's see your Pig guns!!

Pics added------I carried it last time at the lease, saw a nice sow @ 10 yrds & she was gone in a blink; no shot. It is crazy how close you can get to these things during the day in thick country before you see them.

LOL, seeing an AK with a scout scope on it is about like a lawn mower with a super charger on it. Just doesn't seem to belong! :) In all seriousness though, your levers would have been just fine in a pinch AKE. You would definitely surprise the hell out of yourself at just how fast you can accurately cycle a lever when a 300 pound pissed off boar is baring down on you with blood in it's eyes. Been there, done that. I, like you, am not the most comfortable person in the world when I am in thick brush and know there is pigs in there with me. With a bolt especially. But thats what I carry my .500 S&W or my .357 Python when I have a bolt action with me. Really don't feel the need when I have old Bessy (My .444 Marlin) with me :)

my eyes are not what they used to be and the AK's sights are useless. I have taken several pigs with my 94's, and definitely agree they are quick to shoulder. However, we see pigs on nearly every trip across the property. With the AK, I am a little more comfortable chasing them into the thickits they disappear into.

My preference is "still huinting" hogs with a handgun.
I do use an old m 71 Wincester occasionally.
Here's a few of my "hog guns"...

Lee Enfield No 4MK 1 in .303 Brit is a nice for brush country pig gun.

those pistols are nice and will do the job, I prefer .44mags and .45 colt (my favorite), for rifles I prefer AR10s, AKs, .45 carbines for up close, far off you cant beat the .308.

My '06 and a handful of hogs sent to jesus would like very much to contest that.

As would me and my 7mm.08 (the .308 all growed up :) )

I know you said no lever guns, but I have a marlin guide gun in 45-70 and it would be an ideal pig gun.

It is short, light, I can cycle it before I get back on target from recoil so follow up shots are not a problem, and the 45-70 with almost any ammo you can find for it will wallop a pig pretty good.

I even kill them with a .17hmr regular. got too many pigs to waste expensive ammo on. from the .17 to the .308 pigs go down, too many pigs to worry about whether they drop now or later. just depends if you are good enough to make a kill shot.

All good selections; I am hoping to see rigs built just for that purpose. Flintknapper has a wicked AR/SOCOM rig that is ideal, but way out of my pricerange for pig duty. I have only had this lease 2 years, and up to now most pigs taken have been from a stand or from the truck, with only a couple taken on foot while walking the property.

When we walk up on them, they vanish into thickets I am not following them into w/o a semi. With the AK, I am a little more willing to give that a shot.

I've got a Win. .375 I'd like to whack a hog with, Win. '94 Big Bore. I've got some 220 gr. FP's, bet they'd make ol' Porky lay down!

AKElroy, if those pigs can move that fast getting away from you, just think about trying to get one of them in your scope sights to get off a shot, best leave the iron sights on it. JMHO

huntershooter, I'll bet that Winnie .348 sure spins them around when you hit one!!

with a pistol my favorite is the .45colt followed by any.44 mag, least caliber I use. stay away from auto pistols, they are not meant for hunting, (animals anyway)

An unmagnified reddot mounted on the gas tube presents the fastest possible sight picture, so I don't agree with comparisons to scopes. As for handguns, I have and still do carry my pistols into the woods. However, I still like the powerful instant follow-ups afforded by the AK. Particularly this one; I hVe a lot of confidence in it. It is a terrific shooter.

I used to hunt pigs a lot in Florida and i carried a Thompson Center encore with 500 smith and wesson rifle barrel with eotech mounted. And since it is a single shot I carried Ruger 480 with red dot as well. The 500 and the 480 espically the 500 with 500 gr bullets will do some pig punching.

Any aK or Sks is great hog hunting gear. Make sure you get detachable mags for the sks though,(You dont want to be using a stripper clip when an angry boar is right on your ass!)

My most often used is a Ruger Compact in .308. It was purchased just for that type of hunting. I got tired of the SKs sometimes putting them down and sometimes not, and with the 150 SP's from the Compact I don't have that issue.

I've been in the thick stuff with hogs of all sizes and as up close and personal as it gets many times. When it really gets thick I go in with my Redhawk in 41 mag, and have no issues doing so. It has proven time and time again with both myself and my close hunting bud to reliably drop them at ranges from feet, out to 100yds or so. I have the bigger stuff, and do enjoy it on occasion, but for the most part it's also a lot heavier to tote around.

Feel free to look over the links below for some of the ones we root out of the vines and underbrush on foot.

For fast moving "Pigs" scope is a waste of time:D

Many feel the 45-70, 35 Rem in a lever action with a Ghost Ring on it is the way to go... That M 71, 348 cal would be sweet, but an expensive critter, reloading pretty much it, I would think:confused:

Link discussing 348, ammo etc...

I bought an SKS with a bayonet for close action, but never used it

M1 Garand should do it. One has to love the weight of it to carry it all day long.

How about one of these? It is a .50 Beowulf. Had no problem knocking down two piggies in FL last year.
