I've been thinking about getting a 10/22 for about a year now with the excuse that it would be for my daughter. She likes to shoot and I have her use my Marlin mdel 25 in .22lr, but the gun is a tad heavy for her (She's 9) and while she can work the action fairly well I think she'll enjoy the ease of a semiautomatic.

So I went shopping and found a new youth model at a local gun shop. For some strange reason the thought of getting a youth model never entered my mind. Maybe deep down I really wanted this gun for myself?????

Anyway, since the receiver is the same as the full size 10/22 I can make the gun grow as my kids grow. My son is 5 and is sorta' turning into a gun nut (although I swear I try not to influence him that way too much yet!)

I dig the sights on it. Two green glow dots on the rear and a bright orange glow dot on the front.

If the gun runs anything like my Ruger handguns I should expect my great grandkids to shoot it.

welcome to the club, now, hold on to your wallet, the tempation to modify the heck out of the 10-22 is very hard to resist!

One thing i very highly recommend is to buy a target hammer to replace the factory one, it will reduce the heavy trigger pull that the factory Rugers have. I personally bought a Power Custom Target Hammer at Cabellas. Just replacing that has taken my trigger pull down to about 2 1/2-3 pounds, way lighter than factory. it will help a great deal with accuracy.

Another thing to get is a Bolt Buffer from Volquartsen to quiet the gun a little. a bolt buffer will take that "clack, clack, clack" out of shooting. plus it saves wear and tear on the bolt and the reciever.

if you want any hi-cap mags for it, i recommend the Butler Creek Steel Lips 25 round mags, pretty cool if you wanna rock and roll for some fun.

You and your kids should have a lot of fun with the 10/22. When I was a kid, fellow THR member RON in PA (AKA "Dad") would take me to the range with his 10/22 and a pile of .22 LR ammo. I put countless rounds through it. Unfortunately, he traded the rifle off sometime in the early 80s. :banghead:

I bought one myself for nostalgia a few years ago. If my rifle is typical of current production 10/22s, the triggers suck. I installed a Power Custom hammer and the trigger is now crisp and only a couple of pounds. It was worth every penny of the $40 or so I paid for it.

I put a factory refurbished Nikon 4x32 Prostaff rimfire scope on it, and the rifle is very accurate out to 50 yards. It'll shoot into an inch or less at that range.

The Ruger factory mags give the best reliability, so pick up a few of those. I have limited experience with a Butler Creek Hot Lips 25 rounder, which so far has worked well, too.

Ok, so the consensus is that I need to replace the hammer....since I'm the world's second worst gunsmith, is this something I could do myself without special tools?

also I like the idea of the bolt buffer. Same thing; Can I do that myself?

All you need to replace the hammer is some time, a punch, and a fine file. Follow the instructions that comes with the hammer and go slowly. The bolt buffer replaces the steel pin in the rear of the receiver that the bolt contacts at the rear of its travel. I haven't felt the need to install a buffer in mine but it looks like all you'd need is a punch and mallet to remove the OEM bolt stop pin and install the buffer.

you should get the weaponkraft 10/22 LR ULTIMATE PLUS Performance Package first. it has everything you need to get your 10/22's action working like butter.
 
I have only done the springs in mine and it has made a world of diffrence. If you can change the oil in your car or replace the air filter...then you can do this...

+1 on the Butler Creek steel lips...the hot lips are okay for just avereage shooting...but if you want those mags forever...get the steel lips.

ALSO...25 rounds can take awhile to load. I went to gander mtn and got a Butler Creek mag loader for those mags...about 10 seconds of cranking the handle and a loaded mag...somthing that the kids can enjoy doing! :D


Also, if you plan on replacing the stock and your not too keen on any of the thumbhole stocks..might I suggest the Hogue overmolded stock? I have the Stainless Steel with standard factory barrel with that stock and I tell you that it is a sheer pleasure to shoot.

I took it to the range today to um....well....um to make sure it was safe for the kids! Honestly!

The action is louder than the sound of the cartridge. Weird. Even stranger is that it likes the cheap American Eagle stuff from Federal. I never cared much for that stuff in other calibers, but in .22lr it grouped very nicely.


It can definitely be a tack driver. It's too small for me to shoulder decently, so I think I talked myself into buying another one.

Well I DO have two kids....can't have just one gun now, can I?


And since I have a birthday coming up in a few weeks I ask all friends and relatives posting here at THR to take note of the links and suggestions provided in this thread :neener:
 
I've decked out my ruger 10/22. Everyone on here asks when I start threads and describe customizations, "why put a bipod on it. What's the point?" Here's the deal: I could either have bought fro $130 the used one that was plain, out of the box, or for $10 more I could get the one with the bipod already installed. I know a value when I see it. Since, I've added a bolt buffer, custom magazine release (about 1 1/2 inches long), Jumbo cocking handle, flashhider, tactical sling, and a BSA 3x9x50mm scope. I still have the factory barrel and trigger group, but manage to get 1-2 MOA at 100yards. The only two customizations still feasible are a heavy bull barrel and a new trigger group.

Does anyone know if the factory wooden stock can be modified to accept a heavy barrel?
 
wow, fed am eagle grouping the best? its funny how each rifle is a little different. mine hates that stuff. wolf mt gives me the best group for the dollar.
on the noisey action, the weaponkraft bolt buffer will take care of most of that.

That's only if you fall into trends and fads.....I've had my 10/22 since '82 or '83. I put a cheap 4x32 scope on it shortly after getting it. It hasn't changed in 20+ years, and I have no intentions of doing anything else to it, other than shoot it.
 
The Ruger 10/22 is the "Small Block Chevy Engine" of the .22Rimfire world. You can run it bone stock, or spend probably as much as 10X or 15X the original cost in customization...whatever you want.

Only "extras" I have for my 10/22 are 4 of the Butler Creek "Hot Lips" 25-round mags.
